This book of interdisciplinary essays serves to situate the original Sherlock Holmes, and his various adaptations, in a contemporary cultural context. This collection is prompted by three main and related questions: firstly, why is Sherlock Holmes such an enduring and ubiquitous cultural icon; secondly, why is it that Sherlock Holmes, nearly 130 years after his birth, is enjoying such a spectacular renaissance; and, thirdly, what sort of communities, imagined or otherwise, have arisen around this figure since the most recent resurrections of Sherlock Holmes by popular media? Covering various media and genres (TV, film, literature, theatre) and scholarly approaches, this comprehensive collection offers cogent answers to these questions.

Arthur was not the most diligent student, since his main passion was literature. The young man even published a couple of short novels in the magazine of this institution. In 1881, the young man received a degree in medicine and opened a private practice. However, the patients did not line up outside their door to be treated by such a young doctor, because there were hundreds of people like him. And, when there are no people to deal with, there is no money.Arthur dedicated himself to that job he didn't like for 5 years. During this time he managed to get married, he wrote a novel and many short stories, but these did not bring him fame.In 1886, in just three weeks, Arthur Conan Doyle wrote a novel called Study in Scarlet. Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2013 im Fachbereich Anglistik - Literatur, , Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: With Sherlock Holmes, “the character whose adventures revolutionized crime writing, setting the template for generations of fictional sleuths, [...] The character whose ‘death’ caused grief-stricken readers on the streets of London to wear black armbands” (Billingham xiii), Doyle created a detective who became one of the most famous characters in crime fiction. The world loved the stories about the genius detective and although Arthur Conan Doyle died, had a continuing demand for them. Many authors tried to fulfill this needs and a lot of pastiches, parodies and adaptations were produced until today, reaching from book form, movies, TV-series, over video games, up to graphic novels (Poore 1). The different adaptations vary in a great degree in how faithful they are to the source text and how far they differ from it. This paper will concentrate on a twenty-first-century adaptation, namely Guy Ritchie’s movie Sherlock Holmes from 2009, and its fidelity to the source will be examined. How did Ritchie put the character of Sherlock Holmes and all his trappings into a modern context? Which details out of Conan Doyle’s version were borrowed and in which way do they appear in the movie? And does he succeed in appealing a modern, twenty-first-century audience, although staying true with the source text? Some general information about Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories, as well an analysis of the main characters Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson, will serve as a basis for the comparison. The next important foundation will be laid by the explanation of adaptation theory, examining the notion of fidelity, and answering the questions if a strict fidelity is possible and even appropriate and how it can be put into practice. Then the comparison between the stories and the movie will be drawn, focusing on the plans the filmmakers had, and how they were applied, on details borrowed from the source and changes made, especially watching the characters of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. Finally a conclusion will be drawn and the most important points will be summarized.

The Sign of the Four hides a secret pact among four convicts and two corrupt prison guards. According to Mary Morstan, her father requested her to meet him at the Langham Hotel in London upon his safe return from India. When Mary arrived at the hotel, she was told her father had gone out the previous night and not returned. Despite all efforts, no trace has ever been found of him. With the last pearl she received a letter remarking that she has been wronged and asking for a meeting. Holmes takes the case and soon discovers that Major Sholto, a friend of Mary's father, had died in 1882 and that within a short span of time Mary began to receive the pearls, implying a connection. The only clue Mary can give Holmes is a map of a fortress found in her father's desk with four names.
