Pembunuhan di Wisteria Lodge John Scott Eccles datang ke Baker Street dalam keadaan tidak terurus, marah dan keliru. Bungkusan itu berupa sebuah kotak kadbod yang berisi dua cuping telinga manusia yang diletakkan bersama-sama garam kasar. Inspektor Lestrade mengesyaki ia adalah usikan nakal daripada bekas penuntut Cik Susan yang berdendam dengannya. Bagaimanapun, apabila Sherlock Holmes melihat bungkusan itu, dia serta-merta mengatakan ia adalah bukti satu jenayah serius. Holmes memberitahu Lestrade yang dia akan membantu menyiasat kes itu, bagaimanapun dia tidak mahukan pegawai polis itu memberi kredit kepada namanya kerana baginya kes itu terlalu mudah. Dari mana datangnya dua cuping telinga itu? Misteri Kumpulan Lingkaran Merah Puan Warren, seorang tuan punya rumah sewa menghadapi masalah penyewa yang aneh. Dia memesan barang-barang daripada Puan Warren dengan cara yang pelik, iaitu dengan menulisnya menggunakan huruf cetak pada kertas dan meninggalkannya di atas kerusi di luar bilik. Sherlock Holmes yang pada mulanya tidak berminat dengan kes itu lantas menukar fikirannya. Kenapa penyewa itu terlalu berahsia? Adakah dia seorang penjenayah yang dikehendaki atau dia cuba bersembunyi kerana takutkan sesuatu? Kisah Detektif yang Nazak Puan Hudson menemui Dr. Watson, menyampaikan berita Sherlock Holmes sedang sakit teruk dan tidak makan serta minum selama tiga hari. Dr. Watson terkejut kerana dia tidak tahu-menahu tentang hal itu. Apabila mengunjungi Holmes, Dr. Watson sekali lagi terkejut kerana dia tidak dibenarkan berada dekat dengan Holmes, dan sahabatnya itu tidak mahu dirawat walaupun keadaannya kelihatan sudah amat teruk. Setelah puas memujuk, akhirnya Holmes bersetuju untuk dirawat oleh seorang individu yang dipilihnya sendiri bernama Culverton Smith. Holmes mengenakan syarat tertentu kepada Dr. Watson dan mula meracau- racau. Adakah Sherlock Holmes sempat dirawat atau sikap egonya akan membawa maut ke atas dirinya sendiri?

Yes, he spent the night at Wisteria Lodge, Garcia's rented house, but when he woke up in the morning, he found that Garcia and his servants had all disappeared. He was alone in an empty house. He last remembers seeing Garcia at about one o'clock in the morning when he came to Eccles's room to ask if he had rung.Eccles met Garcia, a Spaniard, through an acquaintance, and seemed to form an unlikely friendship right away. Garcia invited Eccles to stay at his house for a few days, but when Eccles arrived there, he could tell that something was amiss. Garcia seemed distracted by something, and the whole mood of the visit seemed quite sombre.
