"Sherwood Memories - A History of Sherwood Township, Clark County, Wisconsin" is a nonfiction history of a township located in rural central Wisconsin. Sherwood was created in 1874, once named Sherwood Forest, in part because of the large white pine trees that dotted this wilderness landscape when first settled by lumbermen. Those trees were what brought pioneers to the area and trees are what still make this place a beautiful and peaceful area to live in or visit. Included are collections of stories, photos, and memories of Sherwood and its residents from the 1870's until the 1970's. Read firsthand accounts from early settlers about deer hunting, bear trapping, the creation in the 1930's of Sherwood Lake, and more. From lumbering to farming, the land and its people have gone through many changes, not unlike other rural towns throughout the Midwest. This book presents the highlights of many years of research by the author and is meant to be a small souvenir to the world of a place that she is glad to call home.

In the mid-1990s, Manhattan quivered under a dreadful affliction. For one group of New Yorkers, what starts out as a caper worthy of the Hardy Boys themselves quickly spirals into a reckless mission of obsession and a dangerous love affair with dire consequences. Crafted with the focused perspective of the voyeur, the pale of memory portrays a shifting world of the questionable protagonist, a young man named Scott. As he attempts to hide his secrets, he also tries to transform his new lover in a desperate attempt to recreate his own past. For Scott, nothing is as it seems in the swirling vortex of lies, trickery, and emotional misdirection. As perceptions are revealed and confronted, everything Scott wants to believe is challenged with haunting vigor. Too soon, Scotts mania reveals more than he can comprehend or manage. From the darkest memories of his curious, confusing past, Scotts present is about to spin out of control too, to a place where the pale of memory builds to a devastating crescendo. Sherwood Anderson, an important American novelist and short-story writer of the early twentieth century, is probably best known for his novel Winesburg, Ohio. His realistic and nonformulaic writing style would influence the next generation of authors, most notably Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner. Walter Rideout’s Sherwood Anderson: A Writer in America is a seminal work that reintroduces us to this important, yet recently neglected, American writer, giving him long overdue attention. This second volume of the monumental two-volume work covers Anderson’s life after his move in the mid-1920s to “Ripshin,” his house near Marion, Virginia (where Volume 1 ended.) The second volume covers his return to business pursuits; his extensive travels in the South touring factories, which resulted in his political involvement in labor struggles and several books on the topic; and finally his unexpected death in 1941. No other existing Anderson biography, the most recent of which was published nearly twenty years ago, is as thoroughly researched, so extensively based on primary sources and interviews with a range of Anderson’s friends and family members, or as complete in its vision of the man and the writer. Rideout uncovers much new information about events and people in Anderson’s life and provides a new perspective on many of his works. This two-volume biography presents Anderson’s many remarkable attributes more clearly than ever before, while astutely placing his life and writings in the broader social, political, and artistic movements of his times. The Second World War stands as the most devastating and destructive global conflict in human history. More than 60 nations representing 1.7 billion people or three quarters of the world’s population were consumed by its horror. Not surprisingly, therefore, World War II stands as a landmark episode in history education throughout the world and its prominent place in school history textbooks is almost guaranteed. As this book demonstrates, however, the stories that nations choose to tell their young about World War II do not represent a universally accepted “truth” about events during the war. Rather, wartime narratives contained in school textbooks typically are selected to instil in the young a sense of national pride, common identify, and shared collective memory. To understand this process War, Nation, Memory describes and evaluates school history textbooks from many nations deeply affected by World War II including China, France, Germany, Japan, USA, and the United Kingdom. It critically examines the very different and complex perspectives offered in many nations and analyses the ways in which textbooks commonly serve as instruments of socialisation and, in some cases, propaganda. Above all, War, Nation, Memory demonstrates that far from containing “neutral” knowledge, history textbooks prove fascinating cultural artefacts consciously shaped and legitimated by powerful ideological, cultural, and sociopolitical forces dominant in the present.

This volume explores the reception of the classical past in the works of twentieth-century American dramatist Robert E. Sherwood and his use of the ancient world to critique key events and trends in American history. It explores his comedies and the influence of both Greek Old and New Comedy, as well as his mediation of his experiences in World War I through Livy’s account of the war with Carthage. During the 1930s, Sherwood used the Peloponnesian War as a template for bringing to the attention of an unaware public the danger of an impending war between the forces of democracy and the totalitarianism represented by Nazi Germany, and post-war he raised awareness of the dangers of nuclear war through the lens of the Greek gods. As well as looking at his use of the classical past in his work, since Sherwood wrote drama deeply concerned with the major social and political events of his day, his plays open windows onto the major social and political challenges facing the United States and the world from the outbreak of World War I until the beginning of the nuclear age. This volume will be of interest to anyone working on the Classical Tradition and Classical Reception, as well as to students of twentieth-century American literature, drama, history, and politics.
