Why wood? Though it is one of the world’s oldest building materials, wood is still revolutionizing the way buildings are designed and constructed today. It is imperative that everyone considers how construction practices impact climate change. Timber buildings are not only environmentally responsible—they also make us feel measurably happier, healthier, and more productive, benefiting both individuals and organizations. Shigeru Ban Architects has innovated in wood for over 35 years, creating inspiring spaces that have a positive impact on building inhabitants, communities, and the environment. The firm has built over 65 wood and mass timber projects, from prefabricated plywood houses to parametrically modeled glulam gridshells. Timber in Architecture presents the trajectory of 45 works from concept through construction, demonstrating the challenges and merits of wood buildings through essays, technical drawings, and photographs. Featured projects include the Centre Pompidou-Metz (Metz, France, 2010), the Aspen Art Museum (Aspen, Colorado, USA, 2014), the Mt. Fuij World Heritage Centre (Shizuoka, Japan, 2019), and Swatch/Omega Campus (Biel/Bienne, Switzerland, 2019), as well as current works.

Designed and constructed with the precision of a Swiss watch, this monumental hybrid timber campus charts an architectural roadmap toward the future. Completed in 2019, the Swatch and Omega Campus in Biel (Bienne), Switzerland, is a magnificent example of technology, design, and environmental sustainability working in concert to create a space that promotes the health of users and the planet. This book illustrates every aspect of the project, including drawings, plans, and numerous interior and exterior photographs. Pritzker Prize-winning architect Shigeru Ban has experienced firsthand the trauma of natural disasters, which he has addressed in numerous emergency-relief projects. With the Swatch and Omega campus, Ban demonstrates how sustainable architecture can benefit industry as well, and why he promotes timber as the planet's only truly renewable resource. Philip Jodidio introduces readers to the buildings' ingenious and cutting-edge features--a serpentine, cocoon-like facade that echoes the playful elements of the Swatch brand; a gridshell roof structure consisting of thousands of precisely interlocking timber pieces. The Omega buildings with their clean straight lines are equally innovative and express the contrast between the two related brands. A feat of forward-thinking architecture, this corporate headquarters represents a benchmark for future building projects around the world.

Timber is having a renaissance as an architectural material, as more architects come to understand its properties, and enjoy adding it to their repertoire of materials. With a growing crop of good new timber buildings, architects are coming to realise that this is no longer the sole preserve of the traditionalist, but a material that has an important role to play in the contemporary world. The book's introduction examines the ways in which a raw material of diminishing quality (but abundant quantity) can be 'stretched' to perform as it has never done before using new technology and careful detailing. The 40 case studies are devoted to some of the most interesting new wood projects from around the world. The projects are grouped in seven themed chapters. Featured architects from around the world include Steven Holl, Foster and Partners, Rural Studio, Renzo Piano and Shigeru Ban.

As synthetic materials and mutant and hybrid concoctions attain prominence in our daily lives—in our handheld devices, cooking utensils, vehicles, even things as simple as our shopping bags—the design and construction industries have instead re-embraced the familiar, the conventional—wood, which has regained prominence through innovations in engineering and construction methodologies. Technology is now commonly used—and often (though not always) affordably used—to cut, perforate, assemble, erect, and even fabricate materials in a manner not previously possible. Wood is one such material, and Timber in the City documents both the imaginings of those in the nascence of their education and practice and the executed work of design professionals at the leading edge of architecture. These designers, regardless of the duration of their immersion in the field, have imaginatively rethought the means by which we build and the methods by which we define space merely through differing deployments of a familiar building material.

Shigeru Ban may be best known for his evocative Curtain Wall House in Tokyo—a highlight of the Museum of Modern Art's 1999 Un-Private House exhibit—but few know the range of this Japanese architect's work. In this first English-language monograph on Ban, 30 built projects reveal his inventiveness and humanitarianism. Ban's primary objectives in his work are the use of low cost materials and the dissolution of the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces. His paper tube designs, which he first created as emergency housing for victims of Rwanda's civil war, were later reconfigured for earthquake victims in Kobe and are currently incorporated in Ban's Japanese Pavilion at Hannover Expo 2000. Influenced by the Japanese tradition of linking the home with the surrounding environment, Ban has created buildings such as Hanegi Forest and Walls—less House that invite nature to coexist with design.

Shigeru Ban written by Shigeru Ban and has been published by Rizzoli International publication this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Architecture categories.

"This large-format monograph is the first to chronicle exclusively Shigeru Ban's explorations in "paper architecture." Informed by a thorough and early interest in sustainable forms, his innovative practice pioneered the use of paper as a structural element in buildings. This book features permanent and temporary structures, ranging from one-off museums and exhibition spaces to emergency structures for communities displaced by natural and man-made catastrophes. The forty projects featured in the book showcase the variety of possible applications for paper and its derivative forms (cardboard, fiber-based composites). As flexible as it is adaptable, when used in tandem with other locally sourced building materials or post-industrial surplus (maritime shipping containers), Ban's singular use of paper knowingly references paper's traditional uses in vernacular Japanese buildings, and advances modern construction technology, reducing its environmental impact. A number of prominent works from the last decade are featured, including the Nomadic Museums built in New York, Los Angeles, and Tokyo, his work for the Centre Pompidou in Paris and Metz, the Papertainer Museum in Seoul, his pavilions for design and luxury brands like Louis Vuitton and Artek, as well as a number of landmark residences in Japan, Europe, and North America. Of particular focus will be Ban's humanitarian work. Documented in a book for the first time are all the relief projects his studio has undertaken in the last two decades for the U.N. High Commission on Refugees. These include housing for tsunami victims in Sri Lanka and earthquake victims in Turkey and Japan, and emergency shelter for war-ravaged communities in Rwanda and the Congo." --Book Jacket.

Shigeru Ban (b.1957), based in Japan, is a rising star among world-class architects. This book features 32 of Ban's most exemplary projects of the past 10 years, divided into 5 sections based on the primary materials or construction principle used: Paper, Wood, Bamboo, Prefabrication, and Skin. Each project is documented with color photographs, plans, drawings, and a brief, straightforward project description. In addition, the book contains four sections of 'experimental data,' or technical information, printed in red and black on gray tinted paper. These sections gather diagrams, tables, sketches, and explanatory text to document the numerous tests that Ban's office has made over the years to study the strength, performance, and structural potential of his materials. A foreword by the distinguished German architect Frei Otto, with whom Ban has collaborated for several years, introduces the book. Also included is an essay by Shigeru Ban about his work with Otto on the Japan Pavilion.
