This book examines the powerful role of popular culture in the daily online literacy practices of young people. Whether as subject matter, discourse, or through rhetorical patterns, popular culture dominates both the form and the content of online reading and writing. In order to understand not only how but why online technologies have changed literacy and popular culture practices, this book looks at online participatory popular culture from MySpace and Facebook pages to fan forums to fan fiction. Interviews and observations reveal the skills and practices students develop, as they sit multitasking at their computers, across popular culture genres and electronic media. For educators, the book provides significant insights into popular culture literacy practices, thus illuminating how students are making meaning and performing identity every day as they read and write online.

Shimmering Images written by Eliza Steinbock and has been published by Duke University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-03-22 with Performing Arts categories.

In Shimmering Images Eliza Steinbock traces how cinema offers alternative ways to understand gender transitions through a specific aesthetics of change. Drawing on Barthes's idea of the “shimmer” and Foucault's notion of sex as a mirage, the author shows how sex and gender can appear mirage-like on film, an effect they label shimmering. Steinbock applies the concept of shimmering—which delineates change in its emergent form as well as the qualities of transforming bodies, images, and affects—to analyses of films that span time and genre. These include examinations of the fantastic and phantasmagorical shimmerings of sex change in Georges Méliès's nineteenth-century trick films and Lili Elbe's 1931 autobiographical writings and photomontage in Man into Woman. Steinbock also explores more recent documentaries, science fiction, and pornographic and experimental films. Presenting a cinematic philosophy of transgender embodiment that demonstrates how shimmering images mediate transitioning, Steinbock not only offers a corrective to the gender binary orientation of feminist film theory; they open up new means to understand trans ontologies and epistemologies as emergent, affective, and processual.

A study of comparative metaphysics that explores the concepts of Reality and Appearance and their relevance to contemporary religious consciousness. In this pioneering work of comparative metaphysics, Patrick Laude delves into Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Islamic, and Jewish concepts of Reality and Appearance to offer a uniquely lucid exploration of metaphysical representations of reality, relativity, appearance, and illusion. Laude includes discussions of the Absolute and the Relative in Hindu Advaita Ved?nta, Kashmiri ?aivism, Sufi wahdat al-wuj?d, and Madhyamaka Buddhism; the metaphysics of salvation in Buddhist and Christian traditions; and the metaphysics of evil and the distinction between Reality and Appearance in the Jewish Kabbalah, ?aivism, Christian mysticism, and the Sufi school of Ibn al-‘Arab?. The book explores how a discerning and subtle apprehension of the relationship between Reality and Appearance may help contemporary readers and seekers respond to the acute predicaments of contemporary religious and spiritual consciousness. “I have rarely read a work that is so lucid in explaining complex philosophical theories across multiple traditions, so articulate in constructing concise ideas, and so strategic in assembling a framework for analysis. This is a unique and special work of comparative metaphysics rarely found in contemporary works on philosophies of religion.” — Lee Irwin, author of Alchemy of Soul: The Art of Spiritual Transformation

Producing Women examines the ways femininity is produced through new media. Michele White considers how women are constructed, produce themselves as subjects, form vital production cultures on sites like Etsy, and deploy technological processes to reshape their identities and digital characteristics. She studies the means through which women market traditional female roles, are viewed, and produce and restructure their gendered, raced, eroticized, and sexual identities. Incorporating a range of examples across numerous forms of media—including trash the dress wedding photography, Internet how-to instructions about zombie walk brides, nail polish blogging, DIY crafting, and reborn doll production—Producing Women elucidates women’s production cultures online, and the ways that individuals can critically study and engage with these practices.

Hannah Matthews smooth, olive skin turned pasty, white, and flat. It pulled tightly over her frame, leaving behind a flawless but unnatural finish that closely resembled a mannequins. She reached up to touch her face, but her arm locked at the elbow, freezing her limb away from her side at a ninety-degree angle. It lodged squarely, refusing to move any further. She tried to speak but no words would form. A cheesy smile had welded itself onto her lips, one that would lead any passer-by to believe she was quite content. She could still speak, but she couldnt wipe the grin off her face. Her eyes remained frightened and frustrated, despite the story her face told. She had become trapped in the body of a mannequin. Others had been destroyed in this building as well. Nick Pearson had come here not long ago, and his entire body had become covered in thick scars. It happens to all of us. Every day we live, we die a little more. Something makes us scarred and lethargic, stealing our vivacity and our quality of life. Is it circumstances, or is it our choices? History proves we cant prevent our own demise. But what if there was someone who could? Meet the Glitter Man.
