Massachusetts Bay stretches along the rocky coast and dangerously sandy shoals from Cape Ann to Cape Cod and gives the Bay State its distinctive shape and the Atlantic Ocean one of its largest graveyards. Author and longtime diver Thomas Hall guides us through the history of eight dreadful wrecks as we navigate around Mass Bay. Learn the sorrowful fate of the Portland and its crew during the devastating Portland Gale of 1898, how the City of Salisbury went down with its load of exotic zoo animals in the shadow of Graves Light and how the Forest Queen lost its precious cargo in a nor'easter. Hall provides updated research for each shipwreck, as well as insights into the technology, ship design and weather conditions unique to each wreck.

The tragic tale of the sinking of the famine ship, the St. John in Massachusetts Bay in 1849. The Great Irish Famine drove huge numbers of Irish men and women to leave the island and pursue their survival in foreign lands. In 1847, some 200,000 people sailed for Boston alone. Of this massive group, 2,000 never made it to their destination, killed by disease and hunger during the voyages, their remains consigned to a watery grave. The sinking of the brig St. John off the coast of Massachusetts in October 1849, was only one of many tragic events to occur during this mass exodus. The ship had sailed from Galway, loaded with passengers so desperate to escape the effects of famine that some had walked from as far afield as Clare to reach the ship. The passengers on the St. John made it to within sight of the New World before their ship went down and they were abandoned by their captain, who denied that there had been any survivors when he and some of his crew made it ashore. For those who died in the seas off Massachusetts, there was nothing to mark their last resting place; no name, no memory of them ever having existed, just another statistic in a terrible tragedy.

From the wreck of the Sparrow-Hawk in 1626 to the grounding of the Eldia in 1984, Cape Cod's outer beach--often referred to as the "Graveyard of Ships"--saw the demise of more than three thousand vessels along forty miles of shifting shoals. The October Gale of 1841 claimed the lives of fifty-seven sailors from Truro, a devastating toll for a small seaside community. Survivors from the 1896 wreck of the Monte Tabor in Provincetown were arrested for a suspected mutiny. Aboard the Castagna, which stranded off Wellfleet in 1914, several sailors froze to death in the masts, while the crew's cat survived. Local author Don Wilding revisits these and many other maritime disasters, along with the heroic, and sometimes tragic, rescue efforts of the U.S. Life-Saving Service and Coast Guard.

With its incessant fogs and infamously craggy coast, Maine has long been a bane of mariners. Scores of vessels and countless lives have been lost on its rocky shores. Taryn Plumb explores the tragic history of shipwrecks in Maine, focusing on a dozen or so of the most interesting and weaving in tales of pirates, lost treasure, violent storms, and other disasters. Maine’s role in shipbuilding is legendary, and the history of vessels meeting their demise here is equally compelling.

the tragic loss of the palatial side-wheel steamer portland in the horrific gale on november 26 and 27th 1898. the ship sank with all hands, was witnessed by no-one and disappeared without trace. the wreck would not be found until 91 years later. it would remain new england's greatest maritime mystery. the book solves 2-100 year old mysteries. exactly how and why the ship sank. the second mystery involves the 35 year search by sara fuller, who's great grandfather john whitten perished on the portland resulting with her grandmother audrey being given-up for adoption at age 6. she had been looking for the whitten half of the family. for the first time in history, her family is finally all accounted for. so many things happened in the storm,it defied all logic, as the wreck was found over 25 miles from where it was thought to have sunk. for this was a storm like no other with 100 miles per hour winds,40 foot waves and o degree temperatures. before it was over it would sink 150 ships and kill 450 mariners. also covered is the incredible rescue crew headed by the world champion of lifesavers-captain joshua james of the point- allerton lifesaving station in hull mass. my mentor mr. edward-rowe-snow worked on the book for 35 years before his death followed by 32 years on my part. the research totaled 67 years. the evidence as to how and why the portland sank lies on the wreck..the author saw 11 hours of underwater video on the wreck, and went on 2 oceanographic expeditions to the wreck. on the first one,he laid a wreath exactly over the wreck in memory of his mentor edward-rowe-snow and to the 192 passengers and crew who perished on the ship. history has finally come full circle.

Historic Shipwrecks Of The Southern Gulf Islands Of British Columbia written by Jacques Marc and has been published by FriesenPress this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on with Social Science categories.

British Columbia’s rugged Southern Gulf Islands enticed many pioneers, explorers, colonists, miners, and adventurers in the mid 19th century. Fog, wind, strong currents and the lack of aids to navigation made navigating these striking and treacherous islands a hazardous business. Many vessels and seafarers did not survive their intended voyages, and their forgotten remains now litter the sea floor, visited only by intrepid divers searching for clues to the past. As one reads this book, stories will unfold which remind us that not so long ago, travelling by ship along the British Columbia coast would have challenged even the most seasoned mariner, and that danger lurked below the water’s surface. Historic Shipwrecks of the Southern Gulf Islands of British Columbia is a compilation of 14 stories about Shipwrecks throughout those islands. This book not only follows the history of each vessel and their loss, but also describes for the lay person what divers will see when they dive on the sites today. This book is a must have for those with an interest in British Columbia’s maritime history. It is one of a series of shipwreck publications produced by the Underwater Archaeological Society of British Columbia to make the province’s submerged cultural history accessible to everyone.

Although underwater archaeology has assumed its rightful place as an important subdiscipline in the field, the published literature has not kept pace with the rapid increase in the number of both prehistoric and historic underwater sites. The editors have assembled an internationally distinguished roster of contributors to fill this gap. The book presents geographical and topical approaches, and focuses on technology, law, public and private institutional roles and goals, and the research and development of future technologies and public programs.
