Shocking Crimes Of Postwar Japan written by Mark Schreiber and has been published by Tuttle Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996 with Crime categories.

When nerve gas was dispersed in Tokyo's subway system in March 1995, Japanese and non-Japanese alike were shocked. Wasn't Japan supposed to be an orderly, peaceful, and above all safe society with virtually no crime? Not so. Mark Schreiber dispels this stereotype with a fascinating book in which he chronicles some of Japan's most astonishing crimes in the half-century since World War II: a bank robbery and murder in which the killings are carried out by poison; the theft of 300 million yen by a man who is able to peacefully convince four bank employees to step outside of their car for a moment; and, of course, the outrageous activities of Japan's most notorious religious group, AUM Supreme Truth. The social and cultural circumstances attending many of the crimes are equally bizarre, and Schreiber addresses these, as well. Why did Okubo Kiyoshi's rape victims continue meeting him for dates after he violated them? How did Japanese ethics step in, when the evidence didn't stand on its own, to condemn Miura Kazuyoshi for killing his wife? Why did none of the journalists recording the murder of Nagano Kazuo try to intervene to try to save his life?

A LOS ANGELES TIMES BESTSELLER • A NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW EDITOR'S CHOICE • Bestselling author Richard Reeves provides an authoritative account of the internment of more than 120,000 Japanese-Americans and Japanese aliens during World War II “Highly readable . . . [A] vivid and instructive reminder of what war and fear can do to civilized people.” —Evan Thomas, The New York Times Book Review After Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, President Roosevelt signed an executive order that forced more than 120,000 Japanese Americans into primitive camps for the rest of war. Their only crime: looking like the enemy. In Infamy, acclaimed historian Richard Reeves delivers a sweeping narrative of this atrocity. Men we usually consider heroes—FDR, Earl Warren, Edward R. Murrow—were in this case villains. We also learn of internees who joined the military to fight for the country that had imprisoned their families, even as others fought for their rights all the way to the Supreme Court. The heart of the book, however, tells the poignant stories of those who endured years in “war relocation camps,” many of whom suffered this injustice with remarkable grace. Racism and war hysteria led to one of the darkest episodes in American history. But by recovering the past, Infamy has given voice to those who ultimately helped the nation better understand the true meaning of patriotism.

And learn about the bizarre habits of the eels that roam the Chikugo River. In this eclectic and, well, strange, book you'll relive-from a distance-Kamakura's hara-kiri bloodshed and discover the surprising fate of the armless geisha, Tsuma-kichi. Stories-surprising, fascinating, illuminating, titillating-from the feisty pages of Japan's weekly magazinesEach week, the authors of this book comb the varied weeklies that cascade from Japan's printing presses, pages brimming with blaring headlines and alluring stories. Their translations and interpretations of many of these tales-lurid, quirky and irreverent-have long been a staple on the pages of the country's English-language newspapers, and a big favorite of captivated readers.TABLOID TOKYO is a selection of their best columns over the past four years. Inside are stories about sex, criminal shenanigans and scandal. Families-dysfunctional and otherwise-and the economy. Pets, fashion, trends and much, much more. As a picture of contemporary Japanese society, readers will find this collection often informative, sometimes shocking . . . but always entertaining. Are the stories real? Well, Japanese readers believe so, in varying degrees. They turn to the weeklies to learn, not only the gossip and the frivolous, but also the items glossed over by the sober mainstream media. They look for kernels of truth in even the most outrageous sounding stories. They know that, after all, truth really is stranger than fiction-and often far more fun.

Shocking Representation written by Adam Lowenstein and has been published by Columbia University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-11-09 with Performing Arts categories.

In this imaginative new work, Adam Lowenstein explores the ways in which a group of groundbreaking horror films engaged the haunting social conflicts left in the wake of World War II, Hiroshima, and the Vietnam War. Lowenstein centers Shocking Representation around readings of films by Georges Franju, Michael Powell, Shindo Kaneto, Wes Craven, and David Cronenberg. He shows that through allegorical representations these directors' films confronted and challenged comforting historical narratives and notions of national identity intended to soothe public anxieties in the aftermath of national traumas. Borrowing elements from art cinema and the horror genre, these directors disrupted the boundaries between high and low cinema. Lowenstein contrasts their works, often dismissed by contemporary critics, with the films of acclaimed "New Wave" directors in France, England, Japan, and the United States. He argues that these "New Wave" films, which were embraced as both art and national cinema, often upheld conventional ideas of nation, history, gender, and class questioned by the horror films. By fusing film studies with the emerging field of trauma studies, and drawing on the work of Walter Benjamin, Adam Lowenstein offers a bold reassessment of the modern horror film and the idea of national cinema.
