In the early 1930s, in southern Georgia, young Billy was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole for the murder of Luke Hampton, a crime young Billy did not commit. During his first years in prison he trained the warden's tracking hounds, and with the help of his favorite hound, Ole Red, Billy escaped and made his way to northern Idaho. After many years of worrying about being caught and wondering who had committed the murder, he told his grandson, Trey, a retired detective, about his past and how he had escaped from prison with the help of Ole Red. Even though the murder had been committed in the 1930s, Trey told his grandfather Bill he would go to Georgia and try to find out who committed the murder. Trey got more than he bargained for when during his investigation of the old murder, he uncovered crime and corruption that had been going on for decades in his grandfather's old hometown of Harwood, Georgia. Trey's investigation brought to light the person who murdered Luke Hampton so many years earlier and was a shock and total surprise to him and his grandfather Bill.

Wrecked Lives And Lost Souls written by Jerry Thompson and has been published by University of Oklahoma Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-10-24 with History categories.

Growing up, Jerry Thompson knew only that his grandfather was a gritty, “mixed-blood” Cherokee cowboy named Joe Lynch Davis. That was all anyone cared to say about the man. But after Thompson’s mother died, the award-winning historian discovered a shoebox full of letters that held the key to a long-lost family history of passion, violence, and despair. Wrecked Lives and Lost Souls, the result of Thompson’s sleuthing into his family’s past, uncovers the lawless life and times of a man at the center of systematic cattle rustling, feuding, gun battles, a bloody range war, bank robberies, and train heists in early 1900s Indian Territory and Oklahoma. Through painstaking detective work into archival sources, newspaper accounts, and court proceedings, and via numerous interviews, Thompson pieces together not only the story of his grandfather—and a long-forgotten gang of outlaws to rival the infamous Younger brothers—but also the dark path of a Cherokee diaspora from Georgia to Indian Territory. Davis, born in 1891, grew up on a family ranch on the Canadian River, outside the small community of Porum in the Cherokee Nation. The range was being fenced, and for the Davis family and others, cattle rustling was part of a way of life—a habit that ultimately spilled over into violence and murder. The story “goes way back to the wild & wooly cattle days of the west,” an aunt wrote to Thompson’s mother, “when there was cattle rustling, bank robberies & feuding.” One of these feuds—that Joe Davis was “raised right into”—was the decade-long Porum Range War, which culminated in the murder of Davis’s uncle in 1907. In fleshing out the details of the range war and his grandfather’s life, Thompson brings to light the brutality and far-reaching consequences of an obscure chapter in the history of the American West.

How many of us allow our treasured memories of ourselves, our children, and their children to slowly slip away and be forgotten, never having been recorded for future generations? “I decided to give my children and their children slices of our lives in book form, a family heirloom of memories in story form, with a photo or illustration with each story,” says Junebug, the author of this wonderful storybook. Words for the Week represents a compilation of one hundred stories, featuring experiences and relationships of the author’s family and friends, spanning the ages of three months to 73 years old. Each story centers on one word or phrase, which becomes the theme and title of the story, and encourages readers to think about similar events in their own lives. Says the author, “Characters in these stories range from myself and my children from a very young age to adulthood, and friends in various situations in life. The emotional content spans the gamut from hilarious to quite serious and sad. This is a verbal depiction of the actual lives of myself and my children, Denise, Danny, Debi, and Davy, all of whom are now grown and happy with the lives they have chosen and built for themselves.” Junebug began writing these stories while working for her local weekly newspaper. “The idea of a building a book of stories for my children about our lives was then born. After three years, one hundred stories were finally completed.”

An Imperial Affair written by John Rickard and has been published by Monash University Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-11-01 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

An Imperial Affair, by award-winning author John Rickard, takes us into the marriage of an Australian couple during a time when private lives were properly private but divorce a scandal. It shines a light on the family values and sexual dynamics of this period, conditioned as they were by the imperial relationship and cultural dependence on ‘the mother country’, which inevitably helped shape hopes, fears and desires. This is also the beautifully told story of the writer’s sensitive and courageous quest to understand his parents, Philip and Pearl, and the world he came from and grew up in, its fragile reality filtered through the prism of memory. Part biography, part autobiography, part social history, An Imperial Affair is also a complex, quintessentially Australian meditation on the nature of love.
