The figure of the white hunter sahib proudly standing over the carcass of a tiger with a gun in hand is one of the most powerful and enduring images of the empire. This book examines the colonial politics that allowed British imperialists to indulge in such grand posturing as the rulers and protectors of indigenous populations. This work studies the history of hunting and conservation in colonial India during the high imperial decades of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. At this time, not only did hunting serve as a metaphor for colonial rule signifying the virile sportsmanship of the British hunter, but it also enabled vital everyday governance through the embodiment of the figure of the officer–hunter–administrator. Using archival material and published sources, the author examines hunting and wildlife conservation from various social and ethnic perspectives, and also in different geographical contexts, extending our understanding of the link between shikar and governance.

While many parents encourage their children to become the next Einstein or Yo-Yo Ma, some push their kids to become the next Tiger Woods. No longer does an elite, elderly set dominate golf. A new class of driven teenaged players is transforming the game, and a series of high-profile, professionally- run tournaments determine which of these teens have a shot at reaching the top levels. In Shooting for Tiger, William Echikson takes us inside a spirited season of the American Junior Golf Association's elite tournaments. From the fairways, Echikson unveils a fascinating sub culture: kids who have foregone traditional childhoods, families determined to produce champions, and rigorous golf academies devoted to training the world's top prospects. Vividly told, Shooting for Tiger examines the real costs of professionalizing young players and offers an unforgettable portrait of athletic obsession.

The snow covers the rooftops, muffles the sound, and makes us wonder if what we are seeing is real. Gods, emperors, and warriors with coloured robes and faces walk the white narrow roads. The noise of drums and fireworks will soon scare the demons.00Shooting the Tiger by Xiaoxiao Xu (CN/NL) portrays the traditional festival Shèhu? in the Northwest of China. Farmers invoke blessings for an abundant and fruitful harvest, through theatrical performances, songs, and acrobatics. It is the festival that welcomes the warmth of spring, the joy of blossoming trees.00In a world where the connection between people and the soil has become frail, Shooting the Tiger celebrates an aspect of Chinese culture that is disappearing, or better, evolving. Traditions speak of who we are and where we come from, powerful tools that connect people. Xu shows that there is comfort in traditions, even when they are not ours.00We follow Xu on her journey into the colourful world of Shèhu?. Traveling from village to village, the residents welcome her into their homes in preparation for the events. These moments allow for the mysterious and alienating atmosphere of the festival to appear. Wear your best costume, paint your eyes, be ready to shoot the tiger: it is the beginning of a new season.

Excerpt from Tiger-Shooting in the Doon and Ulwar: With Life in India IN my opinion there is no sport which is equal to tiger-shooting. A keen fox-hunter may ask whether it is better than a good run with fox-hounds. I consider that it is so most assuredly. 'i could give numerous reasons for the choice, the chief amongst which I may mention. In tiger-hunting the scene of the chase is in the beautiful and wild Indian jungles, pervaded as they are by a feeling of solitude and romance. The skin of the tiger, a valuable trophy, is the reward of success. Besides, if the sportsman has only one or two companions, he experiences the enjoy ment of an individual share in the management of the hunting, but this is denied to all fox-hunters, except such favoured individuals as the master or huntsman of the pack.
