Shooting the Family, a collection of essays on the contemporary media landscape, explores ever-changing representations of family life on a global scale. The contributors argue that new recording technologies allows families an unusual kind of freedom—until now unknown—to define and respond to their own lives and memories. Recently released videos made by young émigrés as they discover new homelands and resolve conflicts with their parents, for example, reverberate alongside the dark portrayals of family life in the formal filmmaking of Ang Lee. This book will be a boon to scholars of film theory and media studies, as well as to anyone interested in the construction of the family in a postmodern world.

"Family photographs are a universally familiar genre, and an intimate one, which makes this collection an accessible entry point for its deceptively simple but deeply complex social and representational issues. In turning their cameras on their own households,17 artists including Miguel Calder*n, Ari Markopoulos, Chris Verene and Gillian Wearing consider the family as a dynamic social institution, and confirm, if there was any doubt, that its affairs are never simply personal, but rather are entwined with and illustrative of broader historical, anthropological and economic considerations. Using the languages of snapshots, documentary and staged photography, as well as conceptual and performance art, and focusing on the undercurrents of contemporary domestic life, these artists link the family to class and financial issues, gender and ethnic stereotypes, shifting marital and generational roles, and the impacts of war and immigration. Emotionally incisive and visually inventive, Shoot the Family transforms that most common artifact--the family photograph--into an illuminating investigation of contemporary culture. Essay by Ralph Rugoff and a short story by Lynne Tillman." --Amazon.com.

[Siren Publishing: The Stormy Glenn ManLove Collection: Erotic Romance, Contemporary, Alternative, Romantic Suspense, MM, HEA] David - I was a member of the city's elite SWAT Team One. I ran into danger without hesitation. I faced bad guys, busted drug dealers, and rescued hostages. I was good at my job. I was not good at relationships. I'd been burned before, both as a man and as a police officer. The last thing I wanted to do was get involved with someone. So, why couldn't I stop thinking about the sexy doctor? Skip - I'd always been drawn to Officer David Wu, but the man wouldn't give me the time of day, until one night he did, but his offer came with conditions. No strings attached. I agreed because I couldn't deny my need to experience one night of passion in his arms. When I woke alone the next morning, I realized he had meant every word. So, why can't I stop thinking about the handsome SWAT officer? Keeping our distance from each other seems futile when someone comes after us. Between threats, car explosions, and a growing list of people out to get us, sticking together might be the only thing keeping us alive. Stormy Glenn is a Siren-exclusive author.

Shot On Location written by R. Barton Palmer and has been published by Rutgers University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-02-18 with Performing Arts categories.

In the early days of filmmaking, before many of Hollywood’s elaborate sets and soundstages had been built, it was common for movies to be shot on location. Decades later, Hollywood filmmakers rediscovered the practice of using real locations and documentary footage in their narrative features. Why did this happen? What caused this sudden change? Renowned film scholar R. Barton Palmer answers this question in Shot on Location by exploring the historical, ideological, economic, and technological developments that led Hollywood to head back outside in order to capture footage of real places. His groundbreaking research reveals that wartime newsreels had a massive influence on postwar Hollywood film, although there are key distinctions to be made between these movies and their closest contemporaries, Italian neorealist films. Considering how these practices were used in everything from war movies like Twelve O’Clock High to westerns like The Searchers, Palmer explores how the blurring of the formal boundaries between cinematic journalism and fiction lent a “reality effect” to otherwise implausible stories. Shot on Location describes how the period’s greatest directors, from Alfred Hitchcock to Billy Wilder, increasingly moved beyond the confines of the studio. At the same time, the book acknowledges the collaborative nature of moviemaking, identifying key roles that screenwriters, art designers, location scouts, and editors played in incorporating actual geographical locales and social milieus within a fictional framework. Palmer thus offers a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at how Hollywood transformed the way we view real spaces.

The Black Conservative An American Hero written by Richard Jules Valvano and has been published by Dorrance Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-10-10 with Fiction categories.

The Black Conservative: An American Hero By Richard Jules Valvano Can a powerful piece of fiction undo the negative stereotyping cast on a group of individuals and make them noble and heroic? In this riveting and explosive novel, the author is betting it will. For years, the black left has cast politically conservative African-Americans as insensitive traitors to the Civil Rights Movement. They are seen as unhinged thinkers who dare to question liberal conventional wisdom concerning black matters and issues. They are often depicted as “Uncle Toms” and whites in dark skin who actually want blacks to be passive porters, shoe-shiners and doormats in a white society. The Black Conservative: An American Hero not only challenges these stereotypes, it does it by way of an engaging thriller filled with fascinating characters. The entire effect is meant to give black conservatives a human element, an insight into their thinking, and a culmination of a renewed and invigorating image of them.
