In the beginning of the story, Kai, Brenda, and Cora are on separate paths on separate worlds. Chief Blank stands at the middle of their future confluence in his position as the man with the plan to close a Rift in time and space. Kai learns about his culture and the value of tradition as he guards and tends the last fruit of the tree of life. Cora arrived on a planet with a two-pack of Twinkies more ancient than the omniverse, and no concept of who or what she was. Brenda suffers from wounds she acquired attempting to rescue an ally from the core of darkness and she must learn her own vulnerability. Chief Blank is offered a solution to the problem of the rift in the form of an ancient weapon of the enemy, but he must buy it with either the Twinkies or the fruit. Kai flees his customs but not responsibility; he brings the fruit with him to spite his father. Cora is dragged from her home on the world of the Sky-dragons to Eden because of her association with the Twinkies. Brenda hears reports that something wicked is coming to Eden. Everyone is eventually drawn to the brink of the rift and in the end Brenda is forced to take the plunge fortified only by the fruit.
