Short Story Press Presents Broken Rocks by Cynthia Haltom Julia has been let go from her job of 20 years, as a ground water geologist in Eastern Washington and must find a new way to support herself. She decides to pack up her belongings and return to her family's cottage on Pine Island. There she hopes to find a new meaning to her life, while living in the peaceful and serene setting that she always experienced in the northern woods of Canada. She is surprised to discover that her old buddy, Andrew, still spends every summer across the river on Brown's Island, where he spent his youth with his family. The two had always spent their childhoods playing, fishing and enjoying the tranquility of island life as children. Once again, they share time enjoying the love of the great north. Julia had left for college over two decades ago, to make a life for herself working on the plutonium ground water cleanup project left from the atomic bomb processing, at the Hanford Nuclear Site in Richland, Washington. There she had made a life for herself; not returning to the island she loved so much. Destiny forced her to reevaluate her life and priorities encompassing many changes in attitudes and lifestyle. Short Story Press Presents Salvaged Quietude by Ruth Pettite Psychologically, Logan Pelham seems like a normal guy with a constructive filled life. He is about precision, exact timing and a little obsessive compulsive at times. Although time limits are a part of his life, he seems to be a normal everyday kind of guy. When an old girlfriend from the past comes back into his life he finds that time is not of the essence. She is lost, upset, and mute. And to top it off, she is definitely not the girl she once was. Her loud political ways from college are gone, leaving her a frail and extremely timid woman with extreme mental issues. After contacting the police, Logan is connected with the forensic psychologist. Doctor Morgan Shiles knows the woman well, and agrees to meet with Logan. Seeing the woman in slight distress although Logan has offered her a meal, a shower and clothing, Doctor Shiles insists they discuss her issues back at his office. The halls of the institution are not the only things in this short story that have exceptional twists and turns. Be ready for an outstanding mind warp as you read page by page in “Salvaged Quietude.” You never know what, or who, is next in line to come up missing, dead, or more. This turbulent psychological mind blow is definitely a don’t put down page turner. Short Story Press publishes short stories written by everyday writers.

Short Story Press Present True Wind by Matthew Kilpatrick “True Wind” is a fantasy adventure story set in a secondary world where magic exists and so do merfolk (although not in the form traditionally depicted in similar stories). Moonheart, a young merman of the Calm Winds tribe, is sent on a mission to rescue a human (or “drylander”) woman from the clutches of another drylander country’s enemy nation. He must also take his young, vulnerable sister, True Wind along, so that she may discover her destiny. The story features: • A secondary fantasy world filled with magic and other strange things • A young merman’s struggle with bravery and conflicting loyalties • A young secondary antagonist who hopes to discover her destiny, even if it means facing danger • A dangerous rescue mission performed in an unknown, foreign land • A climactic and unexpected resolution The story begins with a depiction of the lives of Moonheart and his fellow merfolk but soon transforms into a suspenseful adventure where the stakes are high and a false or ill-considered move can mean disaster. You will follow Moonheart’s quest to protect True Wind at any cost, even if it means denying her destiny. He may learn, however, that destiny is not something one can thwart, no matter how determined they may be. Short Story Press publishes short stories written by everyday writers.
