Will's Way tells about a young man growing into his own during his senior year in high school. He was forced to leave his friends and swimming career behind when his father lost his job. They moved as a family to Florida from Iowa. Will felt so far away from everything he knew and he was angry that his parents made him move once again. Will devises a plan to return to Iowa and finish high school where he had started and been so happy. He approaches his parents with his plan and to his surprise finds he has their support. He and his father had always had a somewhat distant if not strained relationship. Will was however very close with his mother and his little brother. He didn't necessarily want to leave his family but he wanted to return to the only place that ever felt like home. He works and saves money for his move and in doing so he grows into responsibilities he had not anticipated. He goes about making that plan work until he finally sees that he is very happy, successful at work and relationships and best off right where he is. Short Story Press Presents Ultimate Hunt by Sarah Zachary Archer, a hunting dog bred solely to devote his abilities to catch his prey at any cost, is taken on the strangest hunt he’s ever experienced. Hagar, his master, is set on catching the elusive legendary creature, the unicorn. Once caught, Hagar plans to cut off her horn and use its magic for his own purposes. At first, the prospects of catching a mythical creature seem laughable to Archer, but after he encounters the unicorn firsthand, it is no longer a joke. He gives chase and corners the beast in a cavern, and unforeseen danger gives way to a cave in, leaving both creatures alone together. It’s through these circumstances Archer learns there’s more to the legend of the unicorn than meets the eye, and perhaps the ultimate hunt will change him far more than he realized. Short Story Press Presents Welcome To Colorful Colorado by Ken Green Anyone who has ever moved to a new city to start a new life knows the obstacles, both mental and physical, that such a move creates. No only does it often involve leaving perhaps the only life you might ever have known, but it means starting a new life in an entirely new location, a location that has its own traditions, customs and style. For writer Ken Green, that transition meant leaving the big city of Chicago for the not-so-big city of Denver. It was the Midwest vs. the real West. Chi-Town vs. Cowtown. The City of Big Shoulders vs. the City That’s Near Boulder. And rather than do it for career purposes, he does it more personal reason: to join his future wife. “Welcome to Colorful Colorado” recounts the initial phase of his journey from Chicago to the Mile High City including: • Leaving behind a life of 49 years in Chicago in a matter of weeks • Encountering a Nebraska blizzard • The possible “omen” of breaking down just after crossing the Colorado border “Welcome to Colorful Colorado” is the sometimes-humorous tale of one man’s decision to begin an adventure on the other side of the “world”, when that world is 1,000 miles away. Short Story Press Presents Poor Choices by Robert Porter Poor Choices is a short story about an intelligent man named Dan who works retail. Dan has a lot of talents and a good education, but he is prone to making bad choices that keep him from really having the type of life that he wants. He works at a company called Game Swap, which is a used video game store not unlike ones you see in the mini-malls across America. The story takes real life inspiration from working at a video game retail store and all the annoyances that come from working within that corporate structure. The focal point of the story isn’t retail life itself though, but more the feelings of the main character Dan. There are many people who can relate to the type of character Dan is. He feels like he can do so much more with his life, but the worries over paying the bills and making sure things stay normal keep him within this box. He is much like many twenty-something’s who are trying to find their place in the world and figure out exactly where they want to end up. Dan wants to answer all the question marks about his future, but will the poor choices he is prone to making keep him from doing so? THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER A GUARDIAN, INDEPENDENT, IRISH TIMES AND EVENING STANDARD BOOK OF 2021 'This book is a delight, and it's about delight too. How necessary, at our particular moment' Tessa Hadley, Guardian From the New York Times-bestselling, Booker Prize-winning author of Lincoln in the Bardo and Tenth of December comes a literary master class on what makes great stories work and what they can tell us about ourselves - and our world today. For the last twenty years, George Saunders has been teaching a class on the Russian short story to his MFA students at Syracuse University. In A Swim in a Pond in the Rain, he shares a version of that class with us, offering some of what he and his students have discovered together over the years. Paired with iconic short stories by Chekhov, Turgenev, Tolstoy, and Gogol, the seven essays in this book are intended for anyone interested in how fiction works and why it's more relevant than ever in these turbulent times. In his introduction, Saunders writes, “We're going to enter seven fastidiously constructed scale models of the world, made for a specific purpose that our time maybe doesn't fully endorse but that these writers accepted implicitly as the aim of art-namely, to ask the big questions, questions like, How are we supposed to be living down here? What were we put here to accomplish? What should we value? What is truth, anyway, and how might we recognize it?” He approaches the stories technically yet accessibly, and through them explains how narrative functions; why we stay immersed in a story and why we resist it; and the bedrock virtues a writer must foster. The process of writing, Saunders reminds us, is a technical craft, but also a way of training oneself to see the world with new openness and curiosity. A Swim in a Pond in the Rain is a deep exploration not just of how great writing works but of how the mind itself works while reading, and of how the reading and writing of stories make genuine connection possible.

Beginning with a brief history and evolution of the short story genre, alongside an overview of the key short story writers, and an explanatory chapter of literary criticism, this book aims to give readers insight into the works by canonical British, Irish, and American authors, including Edgar Allan Poe, James Joyce, Flannery O'Connor, and more. Applying close reading skills and critical literary approaches to twelve selected short stories in English, this work conducts comparative analyses to reveal the interrelationships between the texts, the authors, the readers, and the sociocultural contexts. Developed and tested in literature classes at university over several semesters, this book addresses key issues, topics and trends in the short story genre.
