A LETTER TO ALL MY GRANDCHILDREN, When you've stayed at a place for a while you get to know something about it. I've been hanging around this planet Earth for over seven decades and I'm ready to share some of my thoughts with you.There are many aspects to living a full life, but the one I would place on top is knowledge. I am referring to a well-rounded mind that appreciates humorous as well as serious knowledge about as many facets of life as possible.It doesn't matter if we use our knowledge to earn a higher income or that it is self-satisfying. Being well informed allows us to be a part of practically any conversation with family, friends or colleagues. We can also make our own decisions about any situation, public or private. The most important thing is to learn the opinions of all sides. You can learn more when you listen than when you talk. Never stop asking questions. Remember, the only stupid question is the one that doesn't get asked.When presented with a choice, choose wisely by applying the wisdom you have. Wisdom is something we cultivate all our lives. Some choices, like if and where to attend college, are life-altering. Even among your positive picks, there are sub-choices. Will you be a doer or a viewer? Always do your best, but don't sweat the results of your efforts. Enjoy the process.You must learn how to fail as well as succeed. Success is measured by personal achievement. But success is measured by fulfillment as well. If you fail and learn, it is not really a failure. It is the stepping-stone to the next success.I hope you all learn the common courtesies, the little kindnesses that can gently make a difference in someone's day. Be generous with smiles, with thanks, with hands that help. When you have children instill in them the lessons you have learned.Find work you love. Find work that is hard but never boring. Believe in what you do. Take time to play and keep family ties tight. Do save money. In fact when you are earning money, "pay yourself" first by depositing a certain amount every paycheck into your savings account or a fund of some kind. This storage of cash will be empowering in the years to come.In spite of the most advanced television and the Internet, books are here to stay. Thank goodness! Books should be your lifelong friends. The person who loves books is never without companionship or resources. How will you deal with all my suggestions or, for that matter any other advice you're hit with. It's about self-image. Do you see yourself as one who needs to be led or as one ready to lead a life of your own? As for the future, will you be a programmed robot or thinking human being?What will you do? On one hand, you can learn an instrument, team play, collect stuff, clean up the environment or help the needy. Or, you can overeat, gamble, get drunk, talk with your fists, do drugs or join a gang that spells trouble. It's all up to you!You all have dynamic parents. They are standing astride both centuries and will watch over you until you can "fly" alone. I am confident that you are in good hands and will perpetuate the lessons learned from your parents, who, in turn, learned from Grandpa and I and so on back through the generations.I am your past...your grandmother...your ancestor in every sense. I breathe the same air; I feel the same soil and swim the same oceans. When you are old, the memories of your life will light up your eyes and you will realize life has been great and you wouldn't trade your time here on earth.Enjoy each and every day of your life...it passes by so quickly. A number of years ago now as one of my grandsons first birthday approached I thought about what to give a one year old. There are a million things that will be played with for a short while then either broken or ignored. I wanted to give something special, something lasting, something that even when older he might still enjoy. Then it struck me, since he likes the silly little stories I tell him upon his request, that maybe I could write some cute little short stories, with a moral as well, just for him (and any of my other grandchildren as well when shared). Thats all it took to get me started. Since then each year I write a little story that somehow relates to something in his life. When another grandchild came along he also was added to the list of recipients of original stories. When I got to thinking about it I decided there may be other grandparents that would like to spend time with their grandchild reading a little story. Now a few years down the pike and I have enough for a book. And so herein I offer my readers a chance to share the joy of time spent reading to a child. That is why my stories were written in the first place. Children go through phases as with my grandchildren there were the dinosaurs, whales, (especially the blue whale), hedge hogs, puppies and gold fish. Im sure you get my drift. All of these fed my imagination and help to produce stories that have a connection and personal touch for both the child and me. These stories are not written for children to read, but rather for a loving adult to sit down with child on their lap or side by side on a shared sofa and be read to. I recommend using funny voices and lots of emphasis and maybe a tickle or two at just the right moment to add flavor and a garnish to each story. The giggles, like sparklers on the 4th of July, will shower joy in all directions and warm the heart of the one reading the story and those close by. Do not be concerned about the content all the stories contained in this book are rated PG - (to be read by Parent or Grandparent). I hope you will enjoy these short stories even more that I did writing them.

After settling in the Boston area in 1956, she studied art and creative writing. Beginning in the early 1960s, and for four decades thereafter, Ms. Liberman created numerous series of artworks. Her art has been widely exhibited, and is represented in the collection of museums and other public institutions. During her long career in visual art, Ms. Liberman wrote several books, among them some picture books. Her book THE BIRD'S LAST SONG (Addison-Wesley, 1976), which she also illustrated, won a citation as one of the "fabulous books of the year."
