It's the World War II era, and all have felt the Nazi sting. Sole survivors from their village, Albrecht and his blind granddaughter, Annanise, along with his famous Stradivarius, escape to Brooklyn only to discover a new challenge-Poland isn't the only place where Jews aren't welcome. Dr. Morgan survives the war, but at the cost of a leg, and returns home to face two family tragedies. And young Tommy, the pride of the Irish, learns the way of the streets after losing both parents in a single night. The paths of these individuals intersect, and as they dare to cross the lines of race, class, and religion, they create a path of healing along the way. Believing that Annanise possesses a special gift that can unite all people, the aged Albrecht teams with Morgan and Tommy to pray for a miracle. And with God as their orchestra leader, they overcome their personal barriers to bring the Master of the Strings to stage. Robert "Bob" Cossel is a retired twenty-seven-year U.S. Army veteran living in El Paso, Texas, with his wife and three wonderful children. He enjoys hiking, church activities, and, of course, writing. Currently Bob is active as a public school educator, serves as a member of an outreach team for those dealing with hurts, habits, and hang-ups, participates whenever possible in mission trips, and exercises regularly to keep up with the youth!

A James Beard Award-winning writer captures life under the Red socialist banner in this wildly inventive, tragicomic memoir of feasts, famines, and three generations “Delicious . . . A banquet of anecdote that brings history to life with intimacy, candor, and glorious color.”—NPR’s All Things Considered Born in 1963, in an era of bread shortages, Anya grew up in a communal Moscow apartment where eighteen families shared one kitchen. She sang odes to Lenin, black-marketeered Juicy Fruit gum at school, watched her father brew moonshine, and, like most Soviet citizens, longed for a taste of the mythical West. It was a life by turns absurd, naively joyous, and melancholy—and ultimately intolerable to her anti-Soviet mother, Larisa. When Anya was ten, she and Larisa fled the political repression of Brezhnev-era Russia, arriving in Philadelphia with no winter coats and no right of return. Now Anya occupies two parallel food universes: one where she writes about four-star restaurants, the other where a taste of humble kolbasa transports her back to her scarlet-blazed socialist past. To bring that past to life, Anya and her mother decide to eat and cook their way through every decade of the Soviet experience. Through these meals, and through the tales of three generations of her family, Anya tells the intimate yet epic story of life in the USSR. Wildly inventive and slyly witty, Mastering the Art of Soviet Cooking is that rare book that stirs our souls and our senses. In July 1923, less than three years after Westinghouse station KDKA signed on, company engineer Frank Conrad began regular simulcasting of its programs on a frequency in the newly-discovered shortwave range. It was an important event in a technological revolution that would make dependable worldwide radio communication possible for the first time. In subsequent years, countless stations in practically all countries followed suit, taking to shortwave to extend reception domestically or reach audiences thousands of miles away. Shortwave broadcasting would also have an important role in World War II and in the Cold War. In this, his fourth book on shortwave broadcast history, the author revisits the period of his earlier work, On the Short Waves, 1923-1945, and focuses on the stations that were on the air in those early days. The year-by-year account chronicles the birth and operation of the large international broadcasters, as well as the numerous smaller stations that were a great attraction to the DXers, or long-distance radio enthusiasts, of the time. With more than 100 illustrations and extensive notes, bibliography and index, the book is also a valuable starting point for further study and research.
