Buku ini sebuah perkenalan dengan Don Quixote. Karya Miguel de Cervantes yang berumur lebih dari 400 tahun itu akan terbit dalam versi Indonesia, setelah lebih dari 140 bahasa menerjemahkannya. Kata seorang tokoh dalam Don Quixote, Sanson Charasco: "Tak akan ada bangsa atau bahasa yang tak mengalih-bahasakannya.” Ditulis di tahun 1615, dalam Buku Ke-II Don Quixote, yang terbit 10 tahun setelah Buku ke-I, kata-kata melambung itu tentu saja tak bersungguh-sungguh, seperti banyak hiperbol lain yang dipasang Cervantes. Tapi mungkin terjemahan Inggris di tahun 1612 dan Prancis di tahun 1613 mendorong perjalanan novel ini ke mana-mana. Kini, empat abad kemudian, Indonesia terdapat dalam daftar capaiannya. Ada yang mencatat bahwa ini salah satu novel terlaris dalam sejarah: sejak Buku ke-I terbit, 1605, Don Quixote sudah terjual 500 juta eksemplar. Ia memang bukan sejenis karya Shakespeare, pengarang yang hidup satu masa, yang menulis lakon dan puisi. Don Quixote, yang lazim disebut "penggeli hati", bisa diterbitkan dalam edisi ringkas, khususnya untuk anak-anak. Sewaktu saya masih di sekolah dasar, di tahun 1950-an, saya membaca edisi ringkasan yang diterbitkan Balai Pustaka. Kita tahu alur ceritanya sederhana: seorang lelaki dari sebuah dusun Spanyol di abad ke-17 tergila-gila kepada buku-buku cerita fantasi tentang ksatria kelana zaman dahulu. Ia menghabiskan uang dan waktunya untuk membaca dongeng yang seru itu, hingga jadi majenun: ia merasa jadi ksatria berkuda seperti dalam buku caballeros itu. Buku ini mencoba menangkap kembali, menyeleksi, dan mengkritisi, pembicaraan yang beragam itu. Ternyata tak semua yang membahas Don Quixote-termasuk Foucault dan Nabokov cukup tajam menelisik sudut-sudut novel ini, meskipun mereka datang dengan kesimpulan yang cemerlang.
