Giorgio Gemisto Pletone durante la sua vita ha scritto due importanti testi sulla politica noti come Memoriali sul Peloponneso risalenti al 1416-1418 e che sollecitano radicali riforme in campo politico, economico e religioso. Il primo, la Raccomandazione a Teodoro, despota di Morea, e il secondo, il Memoriale a Manuele, imperatore bizantino, sono qui riuniti e tradotti per la prima volta, in una doviziosa edizione critica, insieme alla lettera di Gemisto, qui intitolata All’imperatore e di solito citata come Sull’istmo, anch’essa diretta a Manuele II e che lo informa della situazione nel Peloponneso. La lettera fu scritta, al più tardi, nel 1416. Molto più tardo (1451) èil quarto discorso che conclude questa raccolta di scritti politici, qui chiamato Indirizzo a Demetrio, a quel tempo despota di Morea, che sarebbe stato in seguito coinvolto nella distruzione del più importante trattato filosofico di Pletone. Le concezioni politiche di Pletone si radicano nel platonismo e si iscrivono nel quadro delle difficoltà del tramonto dell’impero bizantino e nondimeno, stabilendosi nei princìpi metafisici atemporali, conservano, sotto molti aspetti, una sorprendente attualità per gli avvenimenti del nostro tempo. L’opera èpreceduta da un saggio introduttivo che ha lo spessore di una monografia ed èaccompagnata da note di grande sottigliezza critica ed intellettuale. Questi scritti politici si inseriscono nel programma di pubblicazione delle opere di Pletone, di cui ègià apparso, presso altro editore, il Trattato delle virtùe a cui, tra non molto, seguiranno le opere di rigorosa critica ad Aristotele, e tutte testimoniano la varietà di temi filosofici ai quali si èinteressato e la nozione tradizionale alla quale li sottomette colui che fu considerato il “principe dei filosofi del suo tempo”, quel tempo che conosciamo col nome di Rinascimento.

After the publication of The Origins of Totalitarianism in 1951, Hannah Arendt undertook an investigation of Marxism, a subject that she had deliberately left out of her earlier work. Her inquiry into Marx’s philosophy led her to a critical examination of the entire tradition of Western political thought, from its origins in Plato and Aristotle to its culmination and conclusion in Marx. The Promise of Politics tells how Arendt came to understand the failure of that tradition to account for human action. From the time that Socrates was condemned to death by his fellow citizens, Arendt finds that philosophers have followed Plato in constructing political theories at the expense of political experiences, including the pre-philosophic Greek experience of beginning, the Roman experience of founding, and the Christian experience of forgiving. It is a fascinating, subtle, and original story, which bridges Arendt’s work from The Origins of Totalitarianism to The Human Condition, published in 1958. These writings, which deal with the conflict between philosophy and politics, have never before been gathered and published. The final and longer section of The Promise of Politics, titled “Introduction into Politics,” was written in German and is published here for the first time in English. This remarkable meditation on the modern prejudice against politics asks whether politics has any meaning at all anymore. Although written in the latter half of the 1950s, what Arendt says about the relation of politics to human freedom could hardly have greater relevance for our own time. When politics is considered as a means to an end that lies outside of itself, when force is used to “create” freedom, political principles vanish from the face of the earth. For Arendt, politics has no “end”; instead, it has at times been–and perhaps can be again–the never-ending endeavor of the great plurality of human beings to live together and share the earth in mutually guaranteed freedom. That is the promise of politics.

The Malice of Herodotus can perhaps best be described as the world's earliest known book review. But it is much more than that, for in the course of 'correcting' with considerable vituperation what he saw as Herodotus' anti-Greek bias, Plutarch tells us much about his own attitude to writing history. So that together with Lucian's How to Write History (see Lucian A Selection in this series) it forms a basic text for the study of Greek historiography. It is also perhaps the most revealing example of Plutarch's prose style with its rhetorical variety and energy and odd mixture of good and bad argument. But in citing lost works, Plutarch has preserved valuable fragments which don't exist elsewhere and need to be assessed by all students of the Persian Wars. In this book, Sara Monoson challenges the longstanding and widely held view that Plato is a virulent opponent of all things democratic. She does not, however, offer in its place the equally mistaken idea that he is somehow a partisan of democracy. Instead, she argues that we should attend more closely to Plato's suggestion that democracy is horrifying and exciting, and she seeks to explain why he found it morally and politically intriguing. Monoson focuses on Plato's engagement with democracy as he knew it: a cluster of cultural practices that reach into private and public life, as well as a set of governing institutions. She proposes that while Plato charts tensions between the claims of democratic legitimacy and philosophical truth, he also exhibits a striking attraction to four practices central to Athenian democratic politics: intense antityrantism, frank speaking, public funeral oratory, and theater-going. By juxtaposing detailed examination of these aspects of Athenian democracy with analysis of the figurative language, dramatic structure, and arguments of the dialogues, she shows that Plato systematically links democratic ideals and activities to philosophic labor. Monoson finds that Plato's political thought exposes intimate connections between Athenian democratic politics and the practice of philosophy. Situating Plato's political thought in the context of the Athenian democratic imaginary, Monoson develops a new, textured way of thinking of the relationship between Plato's thought and the politics of his city.
