This chess opening is named for the Dutch seaside resort when it was played there by more than half the competitors in the 1923 masters tournament. World Champions have played it hundreds of times since. It is a good tactical opening to study for a multitude of lessons in passive-aggressive play. Typically, Black declines to engage the center and develops defensively while White fills out the center and hopes to capitalize on a wide array of sacrificial ploys or other tactics to break open Black's defense. There's the double knight sacrifice on b5, taking the e6 pawn for the price of a knight or sacrificing the knight on f5 to place the other knight on d5. Black's kingside position is often compromised with a rook sac on g7 or h7 (or both). This is a collection of 641 chess puzzles that capture the dynamics of play in a very wild and popular opening.

It is more fruitful to study the tactics of an opening you might encounter as White or Black than to study the knight fork, pin or skewer, one tactic at a time. When the type of tactic is provided with the puzzle, it is already half solved. Study the more common tactics found within an opening you face and you will come away with an understanding of the real dynamics of the opening and pick up tactics you can already use. The Dragon is a rich opening with sacrifices, counter-sacrifices and 'do or die' pawn storms - lots of tactics you would see nowhere else. What's more, nearly half of its games are decided in the first 30 moves, so if one falls behind in this opening, there is usually a swift conclusion. Here are nearly 550 chess puzzles to illuminate the Dragon.

This is a collection of chess puzzles from French opening games under 20 moves. They highlight the usual tricks and traps likely to be seen and employed in the game. In this opening, White has a majority in the center and can easily push into Black's territory. Greater mobility creates greater opportunities for tactics and the French is no exception. Arguably this book is for the player on the white side who wants to turn a space advantage into a win. Among the multitude of tactics here are at least 3 sacrifice themes - the bishop for the h7 pawn, the knight for the f7 pawn and the semi-sacrifice of the d4 pawn. Black's mobility on the queen-side can turn a knight sac into a productive invasion but the black queen can often be trapped. Not only will the reader learn to navigate through the opening but will also sharpen his or her abilities to recognize crucial tactics on the chess board.

INSTRUCTIVE NAJDORF MINIATURES "An opening book based only on miniatures? Perhaps it sounds odd at first, but it works well in the sharp Najdorf, and even in the more positional Queen's Indian Defense. As usual Carsten's theoretical coverage is thorough, and the books are not repertoire based, but gives a full examination of these topical openings. Is it limiting only to show miniatures? Maybe, but one somehow get the purified version of a successful strategy, when the games are not complex battles, but a slam-dunk! - Grandmaster Peter Heine Nielsen, Coach & Second to World Champion Magnus Carlsen The purpose of the book is to entertain and educate you. The entertainment consists of 100 main games all of which are 25 moves or less. In addition to the main games, you will find miniatures included in the notes, along with many other complete games. The education part involves solving tactical puzzles, reasoning your way to the right move, spotting combinations and studying the theory associated with these lines. While the theoretical coverage may not necessarily be as deep as in opening monographs or repertoire books, there’s usually more than enough to give you a good understanding of the particular line, making it easier for you to incorporate it into your opening repertoire. We have also tried to include some key alternatives with analysis to give you an idea of other possibilities for both sides. As for the games, they are typically between players with a rating of at least 2350 and in fact are often stronger. However, we have made some exceptions to this guiding principle when a lower-rated player beats a player rated above the magical 2350 number. So that the performances of the players may be evaluated better, their ELO ratings have been included. The subject of this book is the Najdorf Sicilian, which arises after 1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 d6 3 d4 cxd4 4 Nxd4 Nf6 5 Nc3 a6. The Najdorf has been and continues to be a tremendously popular opening at all levels. It is sharp, unbalanced, with many theory-laden lines – and fun. The main lines after 6 Bg5 e6 7 f4 are steeped in theory, making them tricky to play, especially for players with limited time to study.

This a completely new edition, updated and extended from the original 2009 publication. It includes important changes in the basic framework of the repertoire and presents lots of new ideas and hundreds of novelties. The Sicilian Defence is the most widely played chess opening, both at club level as well as among top grandmasters. Since Black gets dynamic play in almost all variations, Black players of all levels will probably continue to play the Sicilian for a long time to come. It has been difficult for White to obtain any advantage in Sicilian sidelines, and this book therefore presents a complete repertoire for White in the most important main lines: the Open Sicilians with 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3. Each variation is presented with its main ideas, its typical tactics and strategies, and with instructive games. The authors always summarize the most important features.
