Herb Caen, a popular columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle, recently quoted a Voice of America press release as saying that it was reorganizing in order to "eliminate duplication and redundancy. " This quote both states a goal of data compression and illustrates its common need: the removal of duplication (or redundancy) can provide a more efficient representation of data and the quoted phrase is itself a candidate for such surgery. Not only can the number of words in the quote be reduced without losing informa tion, but the statement would actually be enhanced by such compression since it will no longer exemplify the wrong that the policy is supposed to correct. Here compression can streamline the phrase and minimize the em barassment while improving the English style. Compression in general is intended to provide efficient representations of data while preserving the essential information contained in the data. This book is devoted to the theory and practice of signal compression, i. e. , data compression applied to signals such as speech, audio, images, and video signals (excluding other data types such as financial data or general purpose computer data). The emphasis is on the conversion of analog waveforms into efficient digital representations and on the compression of digital information into the fewest possible bits. Both operations should yield the highest possible reconstruction fidelity subject to constraints on the bit rate and implementation complexity.

This book introduces methods for copyright protection and compression for speech signals. The first method introduces copyright protection of speech signal using watermarking; the second introduces compression of the speech signal using Compressive Sensing (CS). Both methods are tested and analyzed. The speech watermarking method uses technology such as Finite Ridgelet Transform (FRT), Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) and Singular Value Decomposition (SVD). The performance of the method is evaluated and compared with existing watermarking methods. In the speech compression method, the standard Compressive Sensing (CS) process is used for compression of the speech signal. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated using various transform bases like Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT), Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT), Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT), Singular Value Decomposition (SVD), and Fast Discrete Curvelet Transform (FDCuT).

Following an exchange of correspondence, I met Ross in Adelaide in June 1988. I was approached by the University of Adelaide about being an external examiner for this dissertation and willingly agreed. Upon receiving a copy of this work, what struck me most was the scholarship with which Ross approaches and advances this relatively new field of adaptive data compression. This scholarship, coupled with the ability to express himself clearly using figures, tables, and incisive prose, demanded that Ross's dissertation be given a wider audience. And so this thesis was brought to the attention of Kluwer. The modern data compression paradigm furthered by this work is based upon the separation of adaptive context modelling, adaptive statistics, and arithmetic coding. This work offers the most complete bibliography on this subject I am aware of. This book is intended for use in the teaching of graduate and senior undergraduate courses on multiresolution signal and geometry processing in the engineering and related disciplines. It has been used for several years for teaching purposes in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Victoria and has been well received by students. This book provides a comprehensive introduction to multiresolution signal and geometry processing, with a focus on both theory and applications. The book has two main components, corresponding to multiresolution processing in the contexts of: 1) signal processing and 2) geometry processing. The signal-processing component of the book studies one-dimensional and multi-dimensional multirate systems, considering multirate structures such as sampling-rate converters, filter banks, and transmultiplexers. A particularly strong emphasis is placed on filter banks. Univariate and multivariate wavelet systems are examined, with the biorthogonal and orthonormal cases both being considered. The relationship between filter banks and wavelet systems is established. Several applications of filter banks and wavelets in signal processing are covered, including signal coding, image compression, and noise reduction. For readers interested in image compression, a detailed overview of the JPEG-2000 standard is also provided. Some other applications of multirate systems are considered, such as transmultiplexers for communication systems (e.g., multicarrier modulation). The geometry-processing component of the book studies subdivision surfaces and subdivision wavelets. Some mathematical background relating to geometry processing is provided, including topics such as homogeneous coordinate transformations, manifolds, surface representations, and polygon meshes. Several subdivision schemes are examined in detail, including the Loop, Kobbelt sqrt(3), and Catmull-Clark methods. The application of subdivision surfaces in computer graphics is considered. A detailed introduction to functional analysis is provided, for those who would like a deeper understanding of the mathematics underlying wavelets and filter banks. For those who are interested in software applications of the material covered in the book, appendices are included that introduce the CGAL and OpenGL libraries. Also, an appendix on the SPL library (which was developed for use with this book) is included. Throughout the book, many worked-through examples are provided. Problem sets are also provided for each major topic covered.
