The desirable performance goal of an ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation, NDE, methodology is to reliable and rapidly obtain information regarding flaws in the material being tested. Decisions concerning acceptance/ rejection of material for further usage can then be made on the basis of the nature and severity of flaws within it. Flaw size estimates are currently made on the basis of an idealized physical model, describing the flaw, which uses the computed impulse response as an input. The research reported in this study seeks to define the limits and sensitivities of currently available deconvolution algorithms. In particular, the interrelationship among parameters of deconvolution procedures, noise, transducer bandwidth and instrumentation related errors were studied. Simulation experiments dealing with the impulse train recovery from material samples are illustrated in an algorithmic manner with the aid of a laboratory minicomputer system.

Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) is now playing an increasing role in our modern global economy; in security sensitive industries, for instance. The complexity of the inspection task and either large or limited lot runs now require more operator-assisted or fully- automated signal processing. This book deals with both fields of expertise: NDE and signal processing. On the signal processing side, in the particular context of NDE applications, the following topics are discussed: sensor fusion, signal knowledge representation, artificial intelligence, fuzzy logic, computer vision, integration of numeric and non-numeric informations, parallel decomposition, noise processing and calibration of sensor devices as well as reliability of detection. Some hardware considerations are introduced as well, to discuss platforms on which processing is done. On the NDE side, applications include advances in holographic interferometry, microwave resonance or shearography and also on more traditional NDE techniques such as ultrasonics, infrared techniques, X-ray, computed tomography, Eddy currents. Inverse problems are also discussed. This book is required reading for those who already have some experience in one or both fields (signal processing and/or NDE).

This book deals with a number of fundamental issues related to the practical implementation of ultrasonic NDT techniques in an industrial environment. The book discusses advanced academic research results and their application to industrial procedures. The text covers the choice and generation of the signals energizing the system to probe position optimization, from quality assessment evaluation to tomographic inversion. With a focus to deepen a number of fundamental aspects involved in the specific objective of designing and developing an ultrasonic imaging system for nondestructive testing, aimed to automatically classify the entire production of an industrial production line, targeted to the field of precision mechanics. The contents of this book is the result of the common effort of six University Research Groups that focused their research activities for two years on this specific objective, working in direct conjunction with primary industrial firms, in a research project funded by the Italian government as a Strategic Research Project.

Ultrasonic methods have been very popular in nondestructive testing and characterization of materials. This book deals with both industrial ultrasound and medical ultrasound. The advantages of ultrasound include flexibility, low cost, in-line operation, and providing data in both signal and image formats for further analysis. The book devotes 11 chapters to ultrasonic methods. However, ultrasonic methods can be much less effective with some applications. So the book also has 14 chapters catering to other or advanced methods for nondestructive testing or material characterization. Topics like structural health monitoring, Terahertz methods, X-ray and thermography methods are presented. Besides different sensors for nondestructive testing, the book places much emphasis on signal/image processing and pattern recognition of the signals acquired.

Using a systems level approach, this book employs aspects of linear systems theory and wave propagation and scattering theory to develop a comprehensive model of an entire ultrasonic measurement system. This integrated approach leads to a new model-based engineering technology for designing, using and optimizing ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation inspections. In addition, the book incorporates MATLAB examples and exercises.

In this research the use of modern signal processing and digital pattern recognition in ultrasonic NDE of materials is examined. The high resolution Burg's maximum entropy spectral analysis is shown to provide vital information on the differences among various defect geometries in an aluminum plate. A number of important features computed from the power spectrum have been identified, which in conjunction with correlation matching and by using multi-transducer data can effectively classify the test specimen into three major categories: flat, angular cut, and circular holes and to determine the angles in a multi-stage classification procedure. Size estimation is still a problem that requires further study. Three estimation is still a problem that requires further study. Three deconvolved results. The research clearly shows that the effectiveness of ultrasonic spectroscopy as pioneered by O. Gericke can be significantly improved by using modern digital signal processing and digital pattern recognition.

Ultrasound is currently used in a wide spectrum of applications ranging from medical imaging to metal cutting. This book is about using ultrasound in nondestructive evaluation (NDE) inspections. Ultrasonic NDE uses high-frequency acoustic/elastic waves to evaluate components without affecting their integrity or performance. This technique is commonly used in industry (particularly in aerospace and nuclear power) to inspect safety-critical parts for flaws during in-service use. Other important uses of ultrasonic NDE involve process control functions during manufacturing and fundamental materials characterization studies. It is not difficult to set up an ultrasonic NDE measurement system to launch waves into a component and monitor the waves received from defects, such as cracks, even when those defects are deep within the component. It is difficult however to interpret quantitatively the signals received in such an ultrasonic NDE measurement process. For example based on the ultrasonic signal received from a crack, what is the size, shape, and orientation of the crack producing the signal? Answering such questions requires evaluation procedures based on a detailed knowledge of the physics of the entire ultrasonic measurement process. One approach to obtaining such knowledge is to couple quantitative experiments closely with detailed models of the entire ultrasonic measurement system itself. We refer to such models here as ultrasonic NDE measurement models. In other areas of engineering, models have revolutionized how engineering is practiced. A classic example is the impact of the finite-element method on elastic stress analysis.

Ultrasonic inspection methods are widely used for detecting flaws in materials. The signal analysis step plays a crucial part in the data interpretation process. A number of signal processing methods have been proposed to classify ultrasonic flaw signals. One of the more popular methods involves the extraction of an appropriate set of features followed by the use of a neural network for the classification of the signals in the feature space. This thesis describes an alternative approach which uses the least mean square (LMS) method to determine the coordinates of the ultrasonic probe followed by the use of a synthetic aperture focusing technique (SAFT). The method is employed for classifying nondestructive evaluation (NDE) signals from steam generator tubes in a nuclear power plant. The movement of the probe inside the tube is modeled using spherical and cylindrical coordinate systems. The mean square error (MSE) between the model prediction and the experimentally measured distance between the probe and the tube wall is minimized using the steepest descent algorithm to obtain estimates of the probe canting angle and its location. The information is used in conjunction with the synthetic aperture focusing technique to estimate the location of the ultrasonic reflector. An alternate approach employing a model based deconvolution has been described to facilitate comparison of results. The method uses the space alternating generalized expectation maximization (SAGE) algorithm in conjunction with the Newton-Raphson method to estimate the time of flight. Results using these schemes for the classification of ultrasonic signals from cracks and deposits within steam generator tubes are presented.
