Signaling without Saying develops game-theoretic approaches to social meaning to model the phenomenon of dogwhistles, perhaps best known from political speech. These constructions involve language that sends one message to an out-group while at the same time sending a second-often taboo, controversial, or inflammatory-message to an in-group. Robert Henderson and Elin McCready show that dogwhistles should not be modeled in the same way as related language, like slurs, and nor should they be treated via standard Gricean implicatures computed over truth-conditional meaning; instead, they should be treated as primarily bearing social meaning, as understood by modern variationist sociolinguistic theories. The book identifies and models two different kinds of dogwhistle meaning, while also exploring a variety of related phenomena. The authors show how novel implicatures in the social meaning domain can arise when a listener detects a dogwhistle, and connect them to implicatures familiar in the truth-conditional domain. Social meaning, they argue, can be added to theories of trust in testimonial evidence, and dogwhistles can help to establish trust with an audience, even when expressing false propositions. The final chapter of the book looks at connections between dogwhistles and other issues important in epistemology and philosophy of language which might involve social meaning, such as standpoint theory.

The Signals Are Talking written by Amy Webb and has been published by Hachette UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-12-06 with Business & Economics categories.

Amy Webb is a noted futurist who combines curiosity, skepticism, colorful storytelling, and deeply reported, real-world analysis in this essential book for understanding the future. The Signals Are Talking reveals a systemic way of evaluating new ideas bubbling up on the horizon-distinguishing what is a real trend from the merely trendy. This book helps us hear which signals are talking sense, and which are simply nonsense, so that we might know today what developments-especially those seemingly random ideas at the fringe as they converge and begin to move toward the mainstream-that have long-term consequence for tomorrow. With the methodology developed in The Signals Are Talking, we learn how to think like a futurist and answer vitally important questions: How will a technology-like artificial intelligence, machine learning, self-driving cars, biohacking, bots, and the Internet of Things-affect us personally? How will it impact our businesses and workplaces? How will it eventually change the way we live, work, play, and think-and how should we prepare for it now? Most importantly, Webb persuasively shows that the future isn't something that happens to us passively. Instead, she allows us to see ahead so that we may forecast what's to come-challenging us to create our own preferred futures.

"A snappy tale with sweet undertones." -Kirkus Review Getting dumped is never easy, but there’s a special bonus sting if your ex-fiancé is a producer for a popular morning radio show. Jillian Atwood’s breakup with Nico has become the hosts’ number-one topic. They’re even running a competition to find him a new girlfriend. The entire population of Boston, it seems, is tuning in with an opinion about who Nico should date next—and what Jillian should do to get over him. Jillian’s co-worker, Ben, has his own ideas on that score. He hates seeing Jill depressed over a guy as unworthy as her ex. While he’s providing a friendly ear, he's also realizing how much more he’d like to offer. And if Jill could just get over the man who broke her heart, she might find the one who’s perfectly equipped to heal it... Praise for Diane Barnes’ Waiting for Ethan “The novel’s surprising twist gives the story a satisfying conclusion that makes Gina’s struggle to find Mr. Right worth the wait. Fans of romantic beach-reads will find that this book’s charismatic heroine makes it an engrossing page-turner.”--Kirkus Reviews

In today's managed mental health care environment, clinical hypnosis has become popular as a tool for alleviating symptoms promptly. This book is about using ideomotor (IM) signals in the rapid hypnoanalysis of psychosomatic disorders. The technique of rapid hypnoanalysis addresses the whole brain and places the feeling back into brief therapy without removing the logic or the efficiency. It offers a refreshing alternative that allows therapists to go deeper while being even briefer. Part I covers basic concepts and principles. The value, principles, and treatment planning of hypnoanalysis are discussed, including special intake questions and how to set up ideomotor signals. Part II covers basic applications of rapid hypnoanalysis and illustrates their employment. The seven common causes of psychosomatic disorders, ideomotor applications to Direct Suggestion in Hypnosis (DSIH), hypnotic preparation and care of the surgical patient, self-hypnosis, and treating the cognitive and emotional components of persistent pain are examined. Part III presents clinical transcripts of cases to illustrate the actual uses of the technique with psychosomatic patients. These transcripts explore the technique with a complex smoking cessation patient, a simple smoking recall session, a one-visit cure of a hypersensitive scar, and a workshop demonstration session with an asthma patient. This is a "how-to" book that provides numerous case examples and illustrations showing specifically how ideomotor analysis techniques are used. Would you like to improve the emotional intelligence of your kids? Signals offers a simple, relational approach to help you become aware of your emotions, their impact on others, and how to implement this technique in your home, school, or ministry. While we can’t see the brain, it sends signals to us and those around us. Just as the colors of a traffic light send drivers a signal to go, slow down, or stop, our brains signal to our emotions and affect our behavior toward others. In Signals, Cherilyn Orr introduces a common language and imagery to help everyone manage their emotions. Rooted in neuroscience and the Bible, this approach has been used around the world because its spans across all cultural contexts. Learn how to read these signals, become more aware of your emotions as well as your child’s, and understand how to respond based on the signal sent. For parents and educators, this approach is an easy-to-understand way to evaluate what’s going on with your child, mentally and emotionally, at any given moment to determine an appropriate response. Signals is also useful for kids with special needs, including those with autism. Applying the technique can transform the relationships you have with your kids and set them on a lifelong trajectory of ever-increasing emotional intelligence.

Love Signals written by David Givens and has been published by Macmillan + ORM this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-01-10 with Self-Help categories.

A world renowned anthropologist explores the nonverbal signs, signals, and cues human beings exchange to attract and keep their mates. As a medium of communication, Love's silent language predates speech by millions of years. Today, we still express emotions and feelings largely apart from words. The postures, gestures, and facial cues of attraction are universal, in all societies and cultures. According to Dr. Givens, courtship moves slowly though five distinct phases: attracting attention, recognition phase, conversation phase, touching phase, making love. Since potential mates "test" each other before uniting as one, courtship is a choreographed give and take of signs granting physical and emotional closeness. Love Signals is part enthnography and part how-to. Dr. Givens documents the little courting rituals witnessed in elevators, on subways, and in the workplace. He examines the essential role the face plays in courtship and how it can be optimally displayed. He decodes the body to find silent messages given off by shoulders, neck, arms, hands, waist, calves, ankles, feet, and toes. Dr. Givens analyzes expressive shapes, colors, and markings encoded in arm wear, shoulder wear, leg wear, and shoes. He deciphers the background messages of spaces, places and interiors to learn how environs help or hinder in the meeting process. Chemical cues emanating from aromas, tastes, steroids, sterols, and hormones strongly shape a partner's feelings, so they are explored as well. The book suggests ways to gaze, ways to read eyes across a room, and ways to sit, stand, align, walk dress, and lift a drink to participate in the fascinating adventure of finding, winning, and keeping a mate. Knowing the unspoken vocabulary of love signals will give readers an edge. What this means for courtship is that the reader becomes able to read unspoken motives, emotions, and feelings with great clarity and precision. The more readers know about the nonverbal idiom of attraction, the more likely they will find a loving, lasting partner.
