I galatei, nel sancire i codici di buone e cattive maniere in ogni ambito della vita pubblica e privata, sono un mezzo di affermazione di sé e distinzione per le classi dirigenti, la "gente perbene", ma svolgono anche una funzione educativa di omogeneizzazione e integrazione, sono un lubrificante delle relazioni sociali. All'indomani dell'Unità ai manuali di buone maniere fu assegnato il compito di rafforzare l'identità nazionale, sotto il fascismo furono usati per imporre i modelli della nuova donna e del nuovo uomo fascisti, mentre nel secondo dopoguerra e durante il boom si sforzarono di pacificare i conflitti latenti e di arginare il caos di una modernizzazione che sconvolgeva certezze da lungo tempo acquisite. Dopo il Sessantotto, quando pareva che spontaneità e informalità valessero più delle regole, si ripresentarono le norme di comportamento, in veri e propri controgalatei che segnano il passaggio dall'arte di saper vivere ai manuali di sopravvivenza. Dopo gli anni ottanta e fino a oggi, in una cultura di massa sempre più frammentata e narcisistica, i galatei si trasformano in prontuari di rapida consultazione per apprendere velocemente quanto serve per il successo e la carriera, senza più nessuna pretesa pedagogica. La storia delle buone maniere raccontata dai galatei italiani si svela così, a poco a poco, anche come la storia dei tentativi di autoeducazione e di educazione che la borghesia italiana è andata facendo nel corso di più di un secolo prima di frantumarsi e, almeno per ora, arrendersi.
