The book presents a new science of semiotic linguistics. The goal of semiotic linguistics is to discover what characterizes language as an intermediary between the mind and reality so that language creates the picture of reality we perceive. The cornerstone of semiotic linguistics is the discovery and resolution of language antinomies -contradictions between two apparently reasonable principles or laws. Language antinomies constitute the essence of language, and hence must be studied from both linguistic and philosophical points of view. The basic language antinomy which underlies all other antinomies is the antinomy between meaning and information. Both generative and classical linguistic theories are unaware of the need to distinguish between meaning and information. By confounding these notions they are unable to discover language antinomies and confine their research to naturalistic description of superficial language phenomena rather than the quest for the essence of language.(Series A)

Charles W. Morris' doctoral thesis Symbolism and Reality, written in 1925 at Chicago under George H. Mead, has never before been published. It sets out to prove that thought and mind are not entities, nor even processes involving a psychical substance distinguishable from the rest of reality, but are explicable as the functioning of parts of the experience as symbols to an organism of other parts of experience. Being then the symbolic portion of experience, the psychical or mental can neither be sharply opposed to the rest of experience nor identical with the whole of experience. This edition includes a preface by Achim Eschbach, an extensive bibliography of Morris' works, and indices of names and subjects.

As signifying creatures, we fear the false creation 'signifying nothing' because, like Macbeth, we think of them as daggers of the mind that raise questions about the reality of our signs, about signs as tools of creation and power, about the dark terrors (and lighter joys) that exist in human desire, and about the signs and the mind. This text argues that signs are, at base, generative things creating as much as they refer.

Today’s philosophy of knowledge usually takes into consideration only two leading components: the material world in which we live, and the ideal world of the human brain. They contradict and, at the same time, complement each other, while their cooperation creates new knowledge and its practical implications. This book propounds quite a different conception of producing new ideas, and introduces onto the scene the semiotic reality: signs and sign systems (progenies of human mind). According to this view, the material world is transformed in our mind, where it receives its sign vesture. Then, it can be explained and understood by various audiences, and enters the depository of human wisdom. As the book shows, the interplay of the three realities (ontological, semiotic and virtual) gives rise to many new notions, like metathinking and the second scientific period of our civilization, among others.

Using novel symbols, the Author studies if there are tangible, meaningful constituents within the fabric of the Mind and Vision are, and in doing so, he seeks to find a deeper meaning to what our ultimate Reality is. Is there a functioning, operating connection between Mind and Vision? What is the relationship and relevance between self-awareness and Mind and Vision? The Author argues that we only exist when we are being self conscious of our minds, and that without self awareness we do not and cannot physically exist.

Is it Real? is a collection of twenty-eight papers on the most challenging, provocative – and profound – topics related to the quest for real and virtual realities of vision and other senses, and realities that are either constructed or imagined. There was no school, no theory, no methodology, nor any empirical approach in semiotics which was not forced to take a position, whether implicitly or explicitly, in attempting to discuss this issue. Semiotics is a discipline dealing with signs, and, thus, it is commonly thought that if we say of something that it is a “sign”, then it is something “less” real than the thing itself to which it refers. As such, the field of problems which opens from the theme “Is it Real?” is almost endless – but also relevant. This volume presents interactive dialogue related to this question structured under six different headings: five papers on the topic of “Visual Realities”; six on “What is Real?”; five on “Textual Realities”, concentrating on realities revealed from literature or the written language through texts; five on “Constructed Realities”; three on “Virtual Realities”; and, finally, four papers on “Imagery Realities”.

Who am I? From where have I come and where will I go? What is this consciousness that continuously generates the awareness - "I exist". Is it a feature of my body and will I perish with the death of my body? Or am I the mind? If I am the mind then how do I exist when my mind disappears in a swoon or the deep sleep state? What is the mind? How is it born and how will it perish? Or am I the soul? What is the soul? Is there a single soul or a unique independent soul in each entity? How will I know who I am? What is my reality? - If these questions bother you, then this book is just right for you. In the concluding chapter of Soham Samhita, the Advaitin monk Soham Swami answers all these questions and more. He guides the desperate seeker of the knowledge of the Reality of Self or Atmatattva on the transcendental path that leads to the ultimate truth. About the Author: Paramhangsa Soham Swami (1858-1918) was an Advaitin monk. In his pre-monastic days he was known as Shyamakanta Bandopadhyay. He was famous across the Bengal Presidency in the last two decades of the 19th century for his unusual vocation - wrestling with tigers. His goal was to instil fearlessness in the minds of people of a subjugated nation and prepare them for the war of independence. At the age of 41, abandoning wealth, family, and fame, he became an ascetic and realized the Truth of Self in Samadhi. To eradicate superstition and social, religious, and gender-based discriminations that were obstacles to the development of society, in the last 10 years of his life he wrote copiously on Advaitavad or the philosophy of non-dualism.
