"Silent Coup" alerts us to the destructive effects of corporate control of our economy, jobs, social programs, and political democracy. The book outlines a detailed and workable plan for challenging the agenda for Canada set by large transnational corporations. It shows how social movements and community organizations can be retooled and revitalized to confront these corporations and how true economic, social, and political democracy can be restored. "Silent Coup" offers a sharp diagnosis of the challenges confronting Canadian democracy and a clear prescription for action.

Canadians have been coming to a greater understanding of the threat posed by global warming and the need for urgent action by governments, industry and the public at large. The Trudeau government has, more or less, taken up the cause. Provinces are recognizing the need for action, even as they fight over what that should be. Some multinational corporations are suddenly promoting themselves as environmental stewards. Concerned citizens are looking for ways to effectively reduce their carbon footprint. Yet progress has been slow and limited. In this book, long-time social and environmental activist Tony Clarke provides the hard-to-find information and analysis about what Canada is and is not doing right now to get to zero. He documents the key initiatives that are moving Canada towards a lower-carbon future. But he also spells out how contradictory government decisions and policies are enabling a business-as-usual approach by the oil and gas industry. In doing so, he examines how the Trudeau government promotes measures to reduce greenhouse gases — but then also promotes pipelines that permit further expansion of Alberta's oil sands and new liquidied natural gas plants with enormous greenhouse gas outputs. As a participant in events surrounding the 2016 Paris climate summit and as a critic of Alberta's heedless oil sands expansion in his book Tar Sands Showdown, Tony Clarke combines a deep understanding of environmental issues with knowledge of how Canada's economic and political systems operate. He identifies many positive initiatives organized by various civil society groups taking us on the path to zero emissions. For him, effective citizen engagement and action are key to the serious changes needed to get Canada to zero.

This volume discusses the effects of globalization on changing power relationships between transnational corporations (TNCs), and transnational capital, the state, and subnational groups. TNCs have expanded their power with the deepening of market relations, but they are not causing the state to wither away. Indeed, neoliberal changes often occur with the permission or even encouragement of powerful states. Transnational capital has weakened labour groups in order to make production more competitive, but the disadvantaged groups may mobilise to counter the power of transnational capital. Finally, globalization is subjecting domestic policies to increased international scrutiny.

These Days Almost Anyone Is Bound To Be Depressed By The Litany Of Economic Woes Besieging Canada. Mainstream Economists, Politicians And Business Leaders Claim That Workers Wages Must Fall, That The Social Safety Net Must Be Stripped Away, That Taxes Must Be Cut And That Environmental Regulations Must Be Relaxed. There Is No Alternative, We Are Told, If Canada Is To Be Competitive. But Is This Really The Case? If We Are To Even Begin To Respond To This New Economic Mantra We Have To Know What Makes Our Economy Tick. In InsideCapitalism, Paul Phillips Introduces Us To Political Economic Analysis That Explains Why Firms Behave As They Do, Why We Have Such A High Level Of Economic Monopoly And Who Benefits From The Economic Structure Of Capitalism. In So Doing, Phillips Shows Us That Traditional Economic Analysis Is Mainly Ideology. Clearly, The Dismal Prospects That Average Canadians Face Are Not The Result Of Immutable Economic Laws But Rather Due To The Political And Economic Power That Business Has Amassed With The Aid Of Successive Governments And The Bank Of Canada.

'The latest generation of research in comparative institutional analysis of business is impressively captured in this volume; readers find depth in theory development, breadth in application to practice and policy, and insight on the big research issues ahead. Both generalist and specialist readers will find much of value here.' – Bruce Evan Kaufman, Georgia State University, US This inspiring Handbook brings together alternative perspectives from a range of disciplines to shed light on the nature of institutions and their relationship to firm-level practices and outcomes across a wide range of national settings. Expertly written by leading scholars from a range of different starting points, this compendium presents a synthesis of recent work relating to institutionally-informed accounts from transitional and emerging markets, as well as from mature economies. It specifically focuses on the linkage between institutions and what goes on inside firms, and the relationship between setting, strategic choice and systemic outcomes. The Handbook is explicitly multi-disciplinary, encompassing perspectives from a range of the functional areas of management studies. It will prove invaluable for postgraduate students and faculty in international business, and the wider research community in the areas of international business, corporate governance, socio-economics, and comparative HRM.

Changing Canada examines political transformations, welfare state restructuring, international boundaries and contexts, the new urban experience and creative resistance. The authors question dominant ways of thinking and promote alternative ways of understanding and explaining Canadian society and politics that encourage progressive social change. They examine how the evolution of capitalism is producing new types of transformations and new forms of resistance, and show that aspects of the state and the wider society are being contested. They also discuss the often paradoxical or contradictory effects of various social forces, such as the liberating but also constraining features of new communications technologies, new employment norms and new household forms.
