The Alamo Scouts, Sixth Army's Special Reconnaissance Unit of World War II, provided intelligence-gathering and tactical reconnaissance in the Pacific Theatre. During the war, they performed over 106 successful missions in the Admiralty Islands, New Guinea and the Philippines, most deep behind enemy lines. The Scouts took part in liberating two POW camps. The Scouts evolved from a simple reconnaissance unit to a sophisticated intelligence unit supplying and coordinating large-scale guerilla operations on Leyte and Luzon. They did this without losing a man, killed or captured. The Scouts are now recognised as forerunners of the modern Special Forces.

"Silent warriors: a memoir of America's 442nd Regimental Combat Team is author Jack K. Wakamatsu's deeply felt account of his experiences in World War II. A Nisei, or Japanese-American, Wakamatsu finds himself in a particularly unique position as the war begins. As our government interns his parents in the infamous Manzanar "security camp", his father's business left in unscrupulous hands, Jack and many of his Nisei friends prepare to wage war in the European theater, their twofold aim: to fight for liberty, and to prove to their Caucasian counterparts that they, too, are loyal, patriotic Americans. Made up mostly of Nisei like Wakamatsu, the 442nd's exploits and adventures make for unforgettable reading. In a particularly unsettling episode, a young soldier returns from a harrowing day on the front line, only to learn that angry neighbors have turned against his parents back home and burned them out of their house. The incident is rendered doubly poignant in light of the tremendous dedication and discipline of the 442nd soldiers, many of whom would go on to make the ultimate sacrifice before the war ends. In an era where, as the author points out, we take our priceless freedom entirely too much for granted, Silent warriors is a chilling reminder of the high price that has so often been paid for the sake of preserving American democracy"--Jacket.

THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER 'A terrific book ... It really is one of the most enjoyable histories I've read in many a year' JAMES HOLLAND 'Riveting ... A brilliant account' DAILY MAIL THE FIRST AUTHORISED HISTORY OF THE SBS. Britain's SBS - or Special Boat Service - was the world's first maritime special operations unit. Founded in the dark days of 1940, it started as a small and inexperienced outfit that leaned heavily on volunteers' raw courage and boyish enthusiasm. It went on to change the course of the Second World War - and has served as a model for special forces ever since. The fledgling unit's first mission was a daring beach reconnaissance of Rhodes in the spring of 1941. Over the next four years, the SBS and its affiliates would carry out many more spectacular operations in the Mediterranean, the Atlantic, the Channel and the Far East. These missions - including Operation Frankton, the daredevil attempt by the 'Cockleshell Heroes' to paddle up the Garonne river and sink Axis ships in Bordeaux harbour - were some of the most audacious and legendary of the war. Paddling flimsy canoes, and armed only with knives, pistols and a few sub-machine guns, this handful of brave and determined men operated deep behind enemy lines in the full knowledge that if caught they might be executed. Many were. Yet their many improbable achievements - destroying enemy ships and infrastructure, landing secret agents, tying up enemy forces, spreading fear and uncertainty, and, most importantly, preparing the ground for D-Day - helped to make an Allied victory possible. Written with the full cooperation of the modern SBS - the first time this ultra-secretive unit has given its seal of approval to any book - and exclusive access to its archives, SBS: Silent Warriors allows Britain's original special forces to emerge from the shadows and take their proper and deserved place in our island story.

The year is 1941. Shortly after the United States declares war on Japan in response to Pearl Harbor, Japan's Tripartite Treaty allies, Germany and Italy, declare war on America. The United States finds itself in a two-theater war. President Franklin Roosevelt sets as America's first priority the defeat of Nazi Germany, electing to wage a more-or-less holding war in the Pacific. In the beginning, the only force opposing the Japanese onslaught in the Pacific is the U.S. Submarine Service. Jake Lawler begins the war as executive officer aboard USS S-49, an aged S-class submarine, with orders to conduct unrestricted warfare against the enemy in the Pacific. When a freak, mid-sea grounding causes the loss of S-49, Jake assumes command of USS Orca, a new Gato-class submarine under construction in Groton, CT. As Jake prepares a new boat and a freshly assembled crew for war, the conflict in the Pacific is going badly for the Allies. This is the story of Captain Lawler's eleven war patrols, including an ongoing conflict with Imperial Japanese Navy Captain Hiriake Ito of the destroyer Atsukaze. The crew of the Orca is made up of grizzled veterans and wet-behind-the-ears youngsters, all working together for a single purpose: to bring an implacable enemy to its knees. Along the way, friendships are forged, and love affairs and marriages are created-and destroyed. Pour yourself a glass of your favorite libation, grab a comfortable chair, and enjoy a tale that's sure to hold your interest in Silent Warriors by Gene Masters.

It was April 1943 and a young US Navy Armed Guard seaman left the safety of New York harbor on an oil tanker as part of a large convoy heading to the U-boat-infested waters of the North Atlantic. Below the waves a novice German Navy U-boat commander was on the prowl, stalking Allied merchant ships on their journey across the ocean. Neither of these two warriors could know then that their paths would soon cross. "Above and Below" is the true story of a close encounter between an American and a German across the frigid tumult of the Atlantic Ocean. This historic account pulls from ship logs, war reports and journals to piece together firsthand account of deadly combat faced by both men. When they encounter each other in the Mediterranean Sea, their lives are forever changed.

From the naval battle of Guadalcanal to rescuing George Bush Sr. in the Pacific, here are the stories of US submariners in WWII. The Silent Service in World War II tells the story of America’s intrepid submarine warriors in the words of the men who served and fought in the Pacific against Japan. When Pearl Harbor was attacked in 1941, the enemy had already deployed naval forces, but the United States was soon able to match them. By 1943, new Gato-class submarines were making a difference, carrying the war not just to the Japanese Imperial Navy, but to the vital merchant fleet that transported essential resources to the island country. Starting with the American victory at Guadalcanal, US submarine forces began to constrict the Japanese sea lanes. Operating independently and in wolfpacks, they attacked convoys operating beyond the range of American airpower, making daring forays even into Japanese home waters. Taking on Japanese warships, as well as rescuing downed airmen—including the grateful first President Bush—US submarines made an enormous contribution to our war against Japan. Aside from enemy action, the sea itself could be an extremely hostile environment—as many of these stories attest. From early war patrols in obsolescent, unreliable S-boats to modern fleet submarines roving the Pacific, the forty-six stories in this anthology offer a full understanding of life as a US Navy submariner in combat.
