In Reconciling Indo-European Syllabification, Adam Cooper brings together two seemingly disparate phenomena associated with Indo-European syllable structure: the heterosyllabic treatment of medial consonant clusters, which tolerates CVC syllables, and the right-hand vocalization of sonorants, which ostensibly avoids them. Operating from a perspective that is simultaneously empirical, theoretical, and historical in nature, he establishes their compatibility by crafting a formal analysis that integrates them into a single picture of the reconstructed system. More generally, drawing on evidence from Vedic, Greek, and Proto-Indo-European itself, Cooper demonstrates the continued relevance of the ancient Indo-European languages to contemporary linguistic theory, and, moreover, reaffirms the value of the syllable as a unit of phonology, necessary for these languages’ formal representation.

Any notion linguistically expressed, even one such as the syllable, is always the result of several different viewpoints. In order to take this into account, this book draws inspiration from the scheme of quaternion, as conceived by Sir William Rowan Hamilton and later introduced in theoretical linguistics by Ferdinand de Saussure. The first term of the quaternion (The Dawn of the Syllable) is provided by historical observations. The second term (Beyond the Sound of Syllables) is composed of different descriptive analyses of the syllable carried out in some particular languages and dialects. The third term (The Body of Syllables) presents the analytical-instrumental analysis of the syllable, while the fourth (De Syllaba Ventura) proposes some theoretical considerations.

Per la realizzazione di questo volume, ho fatto riferimento alle mie conoscenze sulla linguistica apprese nei cinque anni universitari, includendo triennale e magistrale, dove ho svolto e superato sette esami linguistici, ovvero due esami di linguistica generale, uno di sociolinguistica, due esami di glottologia, con anche nozioni di dialettologia, uno di linguistica applicata e uno di linguistica italiana. Inoltre, ho attinto dai tanti volumi che possiedo e ho fatto delle ricerche per approfondire alcuni concetti che ho giudicato importanti e degni di nota. Alessio Severo Alessio Severo, laureato nel novembre 2018 alla triennale in Mediazione Linguistica e Comunicazione Interculturale all’Università G. D’Annunzio di Chieti-Pescara, e nel febbraio 2021 alla magistrale in Linguistica e Traduzione all’Università di Pisa. Ho svolto tirocini tra il 2017 e il 2020 in traduzione di testi dall’inglese e dallo spagnolo all’italiano presso l’Università di Pescara e ho tradotto il sito del Parco Regionale delle Alpi Apuane dall’italiano all’inglese.
