The only novel of the twentieth century's most acclaimed surrealist painter, a richly visual depiction of a group of eccentric aristocrats in the years preceding the Second World War __________ 'Start the first page and you are in the presence of an old-fashioned baroque novel, intelligent, extravagant, as photographically precise as his paintings' P. J. Kavanagh, Guardian 'So full of visual invention, so witty, so charged with an almost Dickensian energy that it's difficult not to accept the author's own arrogant valuation of himself as a genius' Observer 'What really strikes the reader is the abounding physical detail of objects, light, spaces, and materials' The Times __________ In swirling, surreal prose, the iconic artist Salvador Dalí portrays the intrigues and love affairs of a group of eccentric aristocrats who, in their luxury and extravagance, symbolize decadent Europe in the 1930s. In the shadow of encroaching war, their tangled lives provide a thrilling vehicle for Dalí's uniquely spirited imagination and artistic vision.

Concepts Of Symbiogenesis written by Lii͡a Nikolaevna Khakhina and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992-01-01 with Science categories.

Symbiogenesis, a term first coined by the Russian botanist K. S. Merezhkovsky in the late nineteenth century, is the evolution of new life forms from the physical union of different, once-independent partners. In this book Khakhina traces the development of the concept in Russian and Soviet scientific literature, reviewing the contributions of Merezhkovsky, A. S. Famintsyn, B. M. Kozo-Polyansky, and other prominent Russian scientists to theories of the role of symbiosis as a source of evolutionary information. This book provides new information for English-speaking scientists. The evolutionary implications of symbiosis have only recently been acknowledged by western scientists, and the sophisticated analysis by Russian biologists described by Khakhina is largely unknown. Lynn Margulis and Mark McMenamin have written an introduction to Khakhina's book (Published in the Soviet Union in 1979). The appendix by Donna C. Mehos describes the American anatomist Ivan E. Wallin, whose theory of symbionticism - species origin by the acquisition of microbial symbionts - was definitively rejected by his peers. The book is essential for anyone wishing to understand a topic of overwhelming importance for evolutionary biology and the history of science.

This fully revised third edition includes up-to-date topics and developments in the field, which has made tremendous strides since the publication of the second edition in 2004. Many novel techniques based on Next Generation Sequencing have sped up the analysis of fungi and major advances have been made in genome editing, leading to a deeper understanding of the genetics underlying cellular processes as well as their applicability. At the same time, the relevance of fungi is unbroken, both due to the serious threats to human health and welfare posed by fungal pests and pathogens, and to the many benefits that fungal biotechnology can offer for diverse emerging markets and processes that form the basis of the modern bioeconomy. With regard to these advances, the first section of this volume, Genetics, illustrates the basic genetic processes underlying inheritance, cell biology, metabolism and “lifestyles” of fungi. The second section, Biotechnology, addresses the applied side of fungal genetics, ranging from new tools for synthetic biology to the biotechnological potential of fungi from diverse environments. Gathering chapters written by reputed scientists, the book represents an invaluable reference guide for fungal biologists, geneticists and biotechnologists alike.
