Published for the artist's first solo exhibition at an American museum, this catalog highlights a selection of the more than 200 works by Paris- and California-based Lebanese artist and publisher Simone Fattal (born 1942). Over the past 40 years, Fattal has made work encompassing abstract and figurative ceramics, bronzes, paintings, watercolors and collages. These works draw from a range of sources including war narratives, landscape painting, ancient history, mythology and Sufi poetry to explore the impact of displacement as well as the politics of archeology and excavation. This superbly produced publication gathers over 100 watercolors made between 1972 and 2016 by Paris- and California-based Lebanese artist and publisher Simone Fattal (born 1942). Combining painting and collage, these works range from abstractions to near-abstract depictions of gardens and biomorphic forms. Fattal studied philosophy at the Ecole des Lettres, Beirut, and began painting in the late 1960s, eventually fleeing Beirut in 1980 with the outbreak of the civil war. Having moved to California, Fattal founded the Post-Apollo Press, a publishing house dedicated to innovative literature. In 1988, she returned to art after enrolling at the Art Institute of San Francisco. Here, reproductions of works are preceded by a discussion with Hans Ulrich Obrist in which Fattal ruminates on her childhood in Damascus, her earliest encounters with modernist and postwar art in Europe, her sculptural work and thethemes that inspire her affinity with for watercolor.

For over five decades, Simone Fattal (b. 1942, Damascus) has eschewed any singular form or subject in her wide-ranging practice. In this deeply personal volume, Fattal’s close friend and confidante Hans Ulrich Obrist delves into the artist’s past to explore the remarkable breadth of her body of work. After studying philosophy, first in Beirut and then Paris, Fattal returned to Beirut in 1969 and began life as a painter—creating sensuous abstract works that diverged from the predominantly figurative paintings commonly exhibited in Lebanon at the time. In 1980, after a decade spent in Lebanon as a painter, Fattal fled the civil war, abandoned her painting practice, and settled in Sausalito, California, where she founded the revolutionary publishing house Post-Apollo Press. In 1988, after studying sculpture in San Francisco, Fattal was consumed by another wave of creativity that led her to pursue ceramic sculptures—a medium in which she continues to work to this day from her studio in Paris. Influenced by her experiences of war and migration, Simone Fattal has transcended the boundaries of both media and geography like few other artists of her generation. In her collages, she combines pieces from her private archive with historical events in the Arab world. Made up of individual parts and reassembled, these works suggest the fragility of an identity shaped by migration. Her more abstract ceramic sculptures reference ancient myths and archaeological finds. Fattal's first solo exhibition in Germany is accompanied by the artist's first comprehensive monograph, which combines essays by long-time companions with new scholarly contributions by international authors. SIMONE FATTAL (*1942, Damascus) was born in Syria and raised in Lebanon. She studied philosophy at the École des Lettres in Beirut and at the Sorbonne in Paris, before returning to Beirut and starting to paint in 1969. Fleeing the Civil War in 1980, she settled in California. Fattal currently lives in Paris, and she has had recent exhibitions at the Whitechapel Gallery, London, Bergen Konsthall, MoMA PS1, New York and the Musée Yves Saint Laurent, Marrakech.

Celebrates the career of an artist who traversed mediums, borders, and cultures. Etel Adnan's creative output spanned genres and languages. An award-winning poet and novelist, her paintings and artist books began appearing in museum shows when she was already in her eighties. This exhibition catalog corresponds with the first comprehensive retrospective of Adnan's work to be held in Germany, a collaboration between the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen in Düsseldorf and the Lenbachhaus in Munich.
