This monograph offers a fundamentally new approach to facilitate the study of metabolic networks in cells. It aims to overcome the limitations of either just a single FBA solution, or an overwhelming number of extreme pathways in a realistic network. Instead it focusses on the FBA solution space and describes it in a simplified way by extracting just a bounded subspace: the Solution Space Kernel or SSK. This reduces the relevant number of flux space dimensions by orders of magnitude, and allows its location, size and shape to be characterised. It is a multi-stage process, requiring many new concepts and algorithms for manipulating polytopes in high dimensional spaces.The book introduces and develops these concepts in a pragmatic way that takes into account the difficulties of performing analyses in a flux space with dimensions counting in the hundreds or thousands. It emphasizes the details of implementation in computational code and applications to realistic models are demonstrated. For many cases, the number of constraints and flux variables that fully specify the SSK polytope is only a single or double-digit number. This allows the range of metabolic states accessible to a cell to be further interpreted geometrically in terms of a manageable set of orthogonal diameters and aspect ratios. In addition, explicit representative fluxes, giving the centre and periphery of the solution space kernel, become available for further exploration.

A remarkable facet of the human brain is its ability to manage multiple tasks with apparent simultaneity. Knowledge learned from one task can then be used to enhance problem-solving in other related tasks. In machine learning, the idea of leveraging relevant information across related tasks as inductive biases to enhance learning performance has attracted significant interest. In contrast, attempts to emulate the human brain’s ability to generalize in optimization – particularly in population-based evolutionary algorithms – have received little attention to date. Recently, a novel evolutionary search paradigm, Evolutionary Multi-Task (EMT) optimization, has been proposed in the realm of evolutionary computation. In contrast to traditional evolutionary searches, which solve a single task in a single run, evolutionary multi-tasking algorithm conducts searches concurrently on multiple search spaces corresponding to different tasks or optimization problems, each possessing a unique function landscape. By exploiting the latent synergies among distinct problems, the superior search performance of EMT optimization in terms of solution quality and convergence speed has been demonstrated in a variety of continuous, discrete, and hybrid (mixture of continuous and discrete) tasks. This book discusses the foundations and methodologies of developing evolutionary multi-tasking algorithms for complex optimization, including in domains characterized by factors such as multiple objectives of interest, high-dimensional search spaces and NP-hardness.

In many decision problems, e.g. from the area of production and logistics manage ment, the evaluation of alternatives and the determination of an optimal or at least suboptimal solution is an important but dif?cult task. For most such problems no ef?cient algorithm is known and classical approaches of Operations Research like Mixed Integer Linear Programming or Dynamic Pro gramming are often of limited use due to excessive computation time. Therefore, dedicated heuristic solution approaches have been developed which aim at providing good solutions in reasonable time for a given problem. However, such methods have two major drawbacks: First, they are tailored to a speci?c prob lem and their adaption to other problems is dif?cult and in many cases even impos sible. Integrated earthquake simulation (IES) is a new method for evaluating earthquake hazards and disasters induced in cities and urban areas. It utilises a sequence of numerical simulations of such aspects as earthquake wave propagation, ground motion amplification, structural seismic response, and mass evacuation. This book covers the basics of numerical analysis methods of solving wave equations, analyzing structural responses, and developing agent models for mass evaluation, which are implemented in IES. IES makes use of Monte-Carlo simulation, which takes account of the effects of uncertainties related to earthquake scenarios and the modeling of structures both above and below ground, and facilitates a better estimate of overall earthquake and disaster hazard.
