Simulation in Acute Neurology is a reference on the execution of a simulation-based educational program in the management of acute neurologic emergencies. Simulation in Acute Neurology has practical value because it contains detailed descriptions of our simulation scenarios. The foundation of this book is our experience with neurosimulation―and it has been a very good one Part I provides an overview of the principles of simulation in medicine and examines the many unique opportunities simulation provides as an educational tool. Barriers to simulating neurologic emergencies are also discussed. Simulation allows a physician-in-training to be observed directly as he or she evaluates and manages acute neurologic disease. Part II is the core of the book. Fifteen acute neurologic emergencies, including complex neuroethical quandaries, are presented in detail, step by step, decision by decision, error after error. Each chapter in this section starts with an explanation of the essence of the discussed neuroemergency (THE PROBLEM BEFORE US), followed by a description of the scenario itself (THE PRESENTING CLINICAL PROBLEM), how scenarios can be adjusted to different types of learners (ADAPTING THE SCENARIO), and ends with a discussion of topics for feedback, which are generally focused around errors and pitfalls (DEBRIEFING). To show the flow of scenarios, we created two additional main headings: (THE IDEAL LEARNER) and (THE NOT-SO IDEAL LEARNER).

This indispensable title rethinks the neurologic examination in a format tailored, modified, and specialized for neurocritical illness. Generously illustrated, this book provides a detailed clinical assessment of the acutely ill neurologic patient. It explains why certain neurologic signs appear and provides fundamentals of localization. Certain situations demand certain structured examinations. Eventually, all information has to be integrated logically. Different examination techniques may be needed. Recognition of deterioration and increased vigilance with important mimickers and confounders are part of our professional fabric. Other necessary skills include predicting a clinical course and outcome, coordinating effective transfers of unstable patients, and communicating expected clinical changes. Neurologists traditionally have carefully considered the examination findings before acting and localized findings before ordering tests; these heuristics must remain. An indispensable title designed for all learners, Examining Neurocritical Patients preserves the beauty of a comprehensive clinical neurologic examination and serves as a high-yield master class for every health care professional tasked with clinical assessment of a neurocritically ill patient.

"This book could easily become the "go to" text for standardized patient utilization and the backbone for implementation strategies in learning programs...It is a must-have for all disciplines interested in adding the human simulation experience to their programs."--Nursing Education Perspectives "Today there is an explosion in the use of simulation in nursing and health professions education. The contributors to this text are experts in this format of teaching. They are the designers of the learning spaces, the authors of simulation cases and evaluation methods, the experts who program the human patient simulators and who teach the patient actors to enact the clinical scenariosÖI consider this a "handbook" on the design, evaluation and practice of simulation for clinical education. If you are a faculty member with concerns about how your students will make the transition from student to professional, use simulation in your curriculum and learn for yourself that pretending is simulation for life but simulation is pretending for the delivery of exquisite clinical care." Gloria F. Donnelly, PhD, RN, FAAN Dean and Professor Drexel University College of Nursing and Health Professions Human simulation is changing the face of clinical education in the health professions. Its use has expanded beyond medical school to encompass nursing and mental health clinical education. This comprehensive guide to establishing and managing a human simulation lab has been written by nationally acclaimed simulation experts and is geared for undergraduate, graduate, and professional settings. The text takes the reader step-by-step through the process of planning, organizing, implementing, and maintaining a simulation lab. It describes the required technology, how to train standardized patients, how to implement a simulation, evaluation and analysis of the simulation experience, and how to develop a business plan. The guide details simulation in undergraduate and graduate nursing programs, physician's assistant programs, and mental health education, as well as the use of simulation with critically ill patients, and in perioperative, perianasthesia, women's health, and rehabilitation science settings. Key Features: Offers a blueprint for developing, implementing, and managing a human simulation lab Details use of simulation in numerous nursing and mental health settings along with case studies Provides tools for evaluation and analysis of the simulation experience Presents undergraduate and graduate nursing simulation scenarios and pedagogical strategies Discusses simulation training and required technology Includes templates for writing cases for BSN and MSN levels

Critical Care Neurology Part I written by and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-01-25 with Medical categories.
Critical Care Neurology, Part I: Neurocritical Care focuses on the care specialists and general neurologists that consult in the ICU and their work with patients in acute, life-threatening situations who are dealing with neurologic or neurosurgical crises emanating from either a preexisting neurologic syndrome or from a new neurologic complication appearing as a result of another medical or surgical critical illness. These two separate clinical situations form the pillars of neurocritical care, hence these practices are addressed via two separate, but closely related, HCN volumes. Chapters in both focus on pathophysiology and management, and are tailored for both general neurologists and active neurocritical specialists, with a specific focus on management over diagnostics. Part I addresses the principles of neurocritical care and the management of various neurologic diseases. Part II addresses the interplay between neurologic complications and the surgical, medical, cardiac, and trauma of critical illnesses that most typically present in the ICU. - Provides an essential neurocritical care overview for general neurologists - Presents neurocritical care specialists with an update on severe neurological illness management - Offers coverage of all the most frequent neurologic diseases requiring intensive care - Includes chapters authored by global leaders in the field, providing the broadest, most expert coverage available on the topics discussed

Mental, neurological, and substance use disorders are common, highly disabling, and associated with significant premature mortality. The impact of these disorders on the social and economic well-being of individuals, families, and societies is large, growing, and underestimated. Despite this burden, these disorders have been systematically neglected, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, with pitifully small contributions to scaling up cost-effective prevention and treatment strategies. Systematically compiling the substantial existing knowledge to address this inequity is the central goal of this volume. This evidence-base can help policy makers in resource-constrained settings as they prioritize programs and interventions to address these disorders.
