This book traces the development of the ideal of sincerity from its origins in Anglo-Saxon monasteries to its eventual currency in fifteenth-century familiar letters. Beginning by positioning sincerity as an ideology at the intersection of historical pragmatics and the history of emotions, the author demonstrates how changes in the relationship between outward expression and inward emotions changed English language and literature. While the early chapters reveal that the notion of sincerity was a Christian intervention previously absent from Germanic culture, the latter part of the book provides more focused studies of contrition and love. In doing so, the author argues that under the rubric of courtesy these idealized emotions influenced English in terms of its everyday pragmatics and literary style. This fascinating volume will be of broad interest to scholars of medieval language, literature and culture.

Come fa Google a sapere che potremmo essere interessati a quel certo tipo di libro o a quella determinata catena di ristoranti? Glielo abbiamo detto noi. Noi esseri umani diamo al colosso del digitale, più o meno consapevolmente, moltissime informazioni sulla nostra vita e sulle nostre preferenze, che poi un algoritmo – programmato e aggiornato da altri esseri umani, con le loro intenzioni e finalità – elabora per fornire risposte «intelligenti». E sempre più intelligenti e puntali. Questa matrice umana della tecnologia appare dunque ancora un discrimine importante per tracciare i confini attuali del rapporto tra uomo e macchina, per cogliere la frontiera tra cosa è «umano» e cosa è «artificiale»; e, quindi, per visualizzare il campo di azione che è ancora ampiamente disponibile alla coscienza delle persone. Ha scritto papa Francesco nel suo messaggio ai partecipanti all’Assemblea plenaria della Pontificia accademia per la vita, il 25 febbraio 2019: «Conviene osservare che la denominazione di “intelligenza artificiale”, pur certamente di effetto, può rischiare di essere fuorviante. I termini occultano il fatto che [...] gli automatismi funzionali rimangono qualitativamente distanti dalle prerogative umane del sapere e dell’agire. E pertanto possono diventare socialmente pericolosi[...]. Dobbiamo comprendere meglio che cosa significano, in questo contesto, l’intelligenza, la coscienza, l’emotività, l’intenzionalità affettiva e l’autonomia dell’agire morale. I dispositivi artificiali che simulano capacità umane, in realtà, sono privi di qualità umana». Le implicazioni etiche sono enormi, al pari delle opportunità offerte dal rapidissimo sviluppo tecnologico. E non possono più restare solo un argomento della grande fantascienza. Sono questioni che richiedono oggi uno sviluppo culturale e di leadership, per affrontare con responsabilità «il rischio che l’uomo venga tecnologizzato, invece che la tecnica umanizzata» (papa Francesco). Ecco dunque perché abbiamo voluto raccogliere una serie di saggi, pubblicati nel corso degli anni su La Civiltà Cattolica, che sotto prospettive diverse affrontano il tema dell’Intelligenza Artificiale (IA). Sono raccolti in quattro sezioni. - Nella prima vogliamo riflettere sulla praticabilità e sui possibili principi di un «umanesimo digitale». - La seconda sezione del volume affronta le questioni etiche poste dall’IA. - La terza sezione affronta più esplicitamente il tema del rapporto tra uomo e macchina. - La quarta e ultima sezione, con due suoi articoli di archivio e un profilo, è dedicata a padre Roberto Busa, un vero pioniere dell’informatica e della riflessione su di essa. Il volume «IA», include i contributi di Thomas Banchoff, Roberto Busa, Carlo Casalone, Giovanni Cucci, Andrea Di Maio, Micheal Kelly, Francesco Occhetta, Gaetano Piccolo, Edmund Runggaldier, Paul Twomey. The first section looks at the current scholarly field of narrative ethics in theology and at theological approaches to literary texts. The focus of the second section of the collection is on the negotiations of identity in autobiographical texts. There is a particular emphasis on exemplary sources from antiquity and from the time of the 19th and 20th centuries. The last two chapters of the collection inquire into the meaning of self-narration in the realm of mental suffering and addictive illness.
