Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2017 im Fachbereich Weltgeschichte - Frühgeschichte, Antike, Note: 2,0, Christian-Albrechts-Universität Kiel (Institut für Klassische Altertumskunde), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: „Sine ira et studio“ (lateinisch: ohne Zorn und ohne Eifer) lautet eine Maxime des römischen Geschichtsschreibers Tacitus. Diese Redewendung findet sich in dem Vorwort der Analen. Er erhebt damit einen Objektivitätsanspruch auf seine Geschichtsschreibung. Als Begründung gibt er an, dass die Epoche, die er behandele, schon so weit zurückliege, dass er keine Motive hätte, seine Geschichtsschreibung zum Instrument seiner persönlichen Erfahrungen mit den einzelnen Individuen, über die er berichtete, zu machen. Die Art der Geschichtsschreibung von Tacitus wird auch als senatorische Geschichtsschreibung bezeichnet, da Tacitus selber Senator war und über die römischen Herrscher berichtete. In den Analen konstruiert Tacitus ein Bild des Tiberius als Tyrannen und versucht mit mehreren literarischen Methoden, den Leser so zu lenken, dass selbst positive Aspekte des Tiberius negativ erscheinen. In dieser Hausarbeit möchte ich deutlich machen, wie Tacitus das konstruierte Kaiserbild darstellt und wie er genau den Leser lenkt, um ihn von seinem Kaiserbild zu überzeugen. Am Ende werde ich die Frage beantworten, ob die Maxime „sine ira et studio“ von Tacitus überhaupt haltbar ist

Not only was Agrippina minor widely used as model for statues or images on coins, she also used to play often a major role in the stories of ancient authors like Tacitus, Suetonius or Cassius Dio. She stands out in the description of those authors, characterized mainly as evil and greedy for power, interfering the businesses of the emperors and therefore totally un-female, if not even totally male in her character. The paper covers biographical facts as well as Agrippina's depiction in literary sources, her relations to the emperors of her family as well as her commemoration on coins. Furthermore, Agrippina's actions, especially her political actions are described and the impact which they had on Roman society and on her characterization by Tacitus.

This 2000 book examines Tacitus' Annals as an ironic portrayal of Julio-Claudian Rome, through close analysis of passages in which characters engage in interpretation and misreading. By representing the misreading of signifying systems - such as speech, gesture, writing, social structures and natural phenomena - Tacitus obliquely comments upon the perversion of Rome's republican structure in the new principate. Furthermore, this study argues that the distinctively obscure style of the Annals is used by Tacitus to draw his reader into the ambiguities and compromises of the political regime it represents. In recent years, the topic of ancient Greek hero cult has been the focus of considerable discussion among classicists. Little attention, however, has been paid to female heroized figures. Here Deborah Lyons argues for the heroine as a distinct category in ancient Greek religious ideology and daily practice. The heroine, she believes, must be located within a network of relations between male and female, mortal and immortal. Using evidence ranging from Homeric epic to Attic vase painting to ancient travel writing, she attempts to re-integrate the feminine into our picture of Greek notions of the hero. According to Lyons, heroines differ from male heroes in several crucial ways, among which is the ability to cross the boundaries between mortal and immortal. She further shows that attention to heroines clarifies fundamental Greek ideas of mortal/immortal relationships. The book first discusses heroines both in relation to heroes and as a separate religious and mythic phenomenon. It examines the cultural meanings of heroines in ritual and representation, their use as examples for mortals, and their typical "biographies." The model of "ritual antagonism," in which two mythic figures represented as hostile share a cult, is ultimately modified through an exploration of the mythic correspondences between the god Dionysos and the heroines surrounding him, and through a rethinking of the relationship between Iphigeneia and Artemis. An appendix, which identifies more than five hundred heroines, rounds out this lively work. Originally published in 1997.
