Since the nation-state sprang into being in 1965, Singapore literature in English has blossomed energetically, and yet there have been few books focusing on contextualizing and analyzing Singapore literature despite the increasing international attention garnered by Singaporean writers. This volume brings Anglophone Singapore literature to a wider global audience for the first time, embedding it more closely within literary developments worldwide. Drawing upon postcolonial studies, Singapore studies, and critical discussions in transnationalism and globalization, essays unearth and introduce neglected writers, cast new light on established writers, and examine texts in relation to their specific Singaporean local-historical contexts while also engaging with contemporary issues in Singapore society. Singaporean writers are producing work informed by debates and trends in queer studies, feminism, multiculturalism and social justice -- work which urgently calls for scholarly engagement. This groundbreaking collection of essays aims to set new directions for further scholarship in this exciting and various body of writing from a place that, despite being just a small ‘red dot’ on the global map, has much to say to scholars and students worldwide interested in issues of nationalism, diaspora, cosmopolitanism, neoliberalism, immigration, urban space, as well as literary form and content. This book brings Singapore literature and literary criticism into greater global legibility and charts pathways for future developments.

English in Singaporeæprovides an up-to-date, detailed and comprehensive investigation into the various issues surrounding the sociolinguistics of English in Singapore. Rather than attempting to cover the usual topics in an overview of a variety of English in a particular country, the essays in this volume are important for identifying some of the most significant issues pertaining to the state and status of English in Singapore in modern times, and for doing so in a treatment that involves a critical evaluation of work in the field and new and thought-provoking angles for reviewing such issues in the context of Singapore in the twenty-first century. The contributions address the historical trajectory of English (past, present and possible future), its position in relation to language policy and multiculturalism, the relationship between the standard and colloquial varieties, and how English can and should be taught. This book is thus essential reading for scholars and students concerned with how the dynamics of the English language are played out and managed in a modern society such as Singapore. It will also interest readers who have a more general interest in Asian studies, the sociology of language, and World Englishes.

Recent research on literature education in Singapore has highlighted the state of ambivalence of the literature curriculum and suggested possibilities for its reconceptualisation, taking into consideration the contemporary Singaporean environment and the impact of globalization; and considering the offering of alternative curricula. This book explores the state of literature as a subject in Singapore secondary schools in relation to this recent research by considering its role in the current political, economic, social and educational climate. It presents the findings and analysis of students' and teachers' perspectives on literary studies in Singapore secondary schools in order to generate theory on how students and teachers deal with literature in English studies. In-depth interpretivist case studies were conducted at five sites, purposively selected to incorporate the range of school types in Singapore. Emergent themes included: the insignificant impact of local literature on the study of literature, the low status of subject and the lack of desirability of literature as a course of study. The findings drawn from original empirical data from students and teachers have implications for theory, policy and practice. The work further delineates a need for further research into continued development of the literature curriculum in the Singapore education system, such as exploring the role of local literature, as articulated in the vision of Singapore as a world- class city.
