I am writing this because generally there is a lack of awareness about these places and hence I name my book "SINGAPORE'S HIDDEN GEM". In our local language it is called "THE ULU PLACES". I mean come on, who the heck do you think would think of going to Singapore for a nature holiday? These less popular ideas are often overlooked by my overseas friends & relatives and surprisingly even for many local Singaporean friends too. Many have not even heard of these places before. I am utterly convinced that is likely the case in the bigger world out there too. Not until recent years had I not known about these places myself despite over 20 years of living here. I would also write about these places from my personal perspective and how I had enjoyed and extracted the most education & enlightenment out of them, which is uniquely my own discoveries to share and to care. My writing will not specifically promote these places of interest for traveling purposes alone. It will also promote an awareness among the readers that there is always something worthwhile in our routine, within our neighbourhood and in what we deem we already know best. We just need to pay attention and explore the opportunities.

A lighthouse on the top of a 25-storey apartment block, a unique rocky area that looks like Guilin in China, the remains of a Shinto shrine built in the jungle by prisoners of war, houses from the Ming and Qing periods donated by Jackie Chan, the bottoms of soya-sauce bottles used to decorate the Sultan Mosque, the "leaning tower" of Singapore, the last remaining stretch of natural beach, a forgotten bomb shelter under a national monument, the beautiful modernist door of a former biscuit factory, a hidden kampong (rural village) dwarfed by residential towers, the splendidly preserved old Changi prison gates, the stately Masons Hall inside the Freemasons' headquarters ... Far from the crowds and the usual clichés, Singapore still has a number of hidden treasures for people who know how to wander off the beaten track. This is an indispensable guide for those who think they know Singapore ... or who want to discover another side to the city.
