Few Australian prisoners of the Japanese in World War II escaped from custody, but Penrod Dean was one of those few. A lieutenant in the Second AIF he was among the thousands captured at the fall of Singapore. Dean and a fellow serviceman escaped from Changi POW camp in 1942. Neither man knew it at the time, but their adventures and their tribulations were just beginning. While on the run they succeeded in sabotaging the Japanese war effort, fell in with the Chinese Communist guerrilla group, and then moved on, alone in the jungles of Malaya. Eventually they were betrayed to their enemies, mercilessly tortured and sentenced to two years solitary confinement at the notorious Outram Road prison in Singapore. Incredibly, Dean taught himself Japanese while in his tiny cell, and worked as a translator after his release back to Changi. He was one of ten Australians chosen to go to Japan and appear as a witness at the Major War Trials.

I was editor of The Malaya Tribune, a daily newspaper in Singapore, sleepily okaying Page One when 17 Japanese Zero bombers shattered the night. It was December 8, 1941. Having been fed daily stories full of optimism from London, we in Singapore hadn’t an inkling that war with Japan was imminent … I sneaked out when there was a pause in the bombing. Limbs of every description – European, Indian, Chinese, Malay and Eurasian – were everywhere. Parapuram Joseph John – ‘John’ to all – is given an ultimatum by the Japanese invaders: work for us or face the consequences. He becomes No.2 at the Domei news agency, working on Japanese propaganda in Southeast Asia and broadcasting propaganda to Indian troops in India, urging them to switch sides and fight against the British, for which he receives a special commendation from Heinrich Himmler – ‘I was not happy about Himmler’s intrusion into my life, but I kept my mouth shut and my neck intact’. John writes about wanton killings in Singapore and Malaya, the daily struggle to find food, and Blood Alley in Penang, where he witnesses a ‘cleansing’. He talks candidly about the rise of the Indian National Army and its charismatic leader Subhas Chandra Bose (whom he meets on several occasions), the creation of the all-female Rani of Jhansi combat regiment and the lure of the nationalist call of ‘Challo Dilli’ (‘On to Delhi’). This is a fascinating eyewitness account of the Japanese occupation of Singapore and Malaya as told by a career journalist. Following the war, John returned to The Malaya Tribune, where his deputy was S. Rajaratnam, the future Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore.

When C.M. Turnbull's A History of Singapore, 1819-1975 appeared in 1977, it quickly achieved recognition as the definitive history of Singapore. A second edition published in 1989 brought the story up to the elections held in 1988. In this fully revised edition, rewritten to take into account recent scholarship on Singapore, the author has added a chapter on Goh Chok Tong's premiership (1990-2004) and the transition to a government headed by Lee Hsien Loong. The book now ends in 2005, when the Republic of Singapore celebrated its 40th anniversary as an independent nation. Major changes occurred in the 1990s as the generation of leaders that oversaw the transition from a colony to independence stepped aside in favour of a younger generation of leaders. Shortly after midnight on 8 December 1941, two divisions of crack troops of the Imperial Japanese Army began a seaborne invasion of southern Thailand and northern Malaya. Their assault developed into a full-blown advance towards Singapore, the main defensive position of the British Empire in the Far East. The defending British, Indian, Australian and Malayan forces were outmanoeuvred on the ground, overwhelmed in the air and scattered on the sea. By the end of January 1942, British Empire forces were driven back onto the island of Singapore Itself, cut off from further outside help. When the Japanese stormed the island with an an-out assault, the defenders were quickly pushed back into a corner from which there was no escape. Singapore’s defenders finally capitulated on 15 February, to prevent the wholesale pillage of the city itself. Their rapid and total defeat was nothing less than military humiliation and political disaster. Japan's December 1941-February 1942 invasion of Malaya and culminating conquest of Singapore is analyzed from an operational perspective. Although overshadowed by better known Pacific Theater actions in World War II, the campaign was Japan's most successful example of joint warfare and replete with lessons for the modern operational commander. Approached from the level of the commander and staff, the background and decision making processes are reviewed, with applicable areas identified for today's leaders. The need for aggressive leadership, accurate intelligence, flexible application of power, adjustment of force based on environmental conditions, and the value of logistics are the major lessons from the Japanese victory. Poor leadership and futility of trying to defend too much are among those lessons from the defeated British.
