This volume explores questions which emerge from considering the relationship between nature and ethics through philosophical, theological, ethical and environmental lenses. It will examine the nature (understood as essence or character) of ethics itself and whether nature (understood as natural world) has embedded in it a moral code, as well as examining how particular ethical/theological worldviews influence our treatment of nature. Is there an abstract, objective moral code in nature? If so, how do we gain access to this code of ethics? Is it only accessible through revelation, as in some religious traditions, or is this code of ethics more generally accessible to humanity? Indeed, does such an objective notion of ethics exist; could it be that ethics are a natural and subjective development? Is ethics a feature of nature, or have we invented it? There is, this volume might suggest, no consensus on these questions, as they at times divide and at times unite both the contributors to this volume and the bodies of scholarly work with which they engage. As time moves forward, investigations into ethics in the context of the relationship between humanity and nature have become more complex, taking account of advances in the natural sciences and a growing appreciation of nature. How are we to understand our relationship with nature, and how does this have implications for our understandings of ethics? Are we now realising the repercussions of our failure to take seriously our experience of climate change? This volume offers the reader a unique and underrepresented interdisciplinary perspective, from philosophers, theologians and environmentalists on the dynamic relationship between nature and ethics. This volume contains the proceedings of CHARME 2001, the Eleventh Advanced Research Working Conference on Correct Hardware Design and Veri?cation Methods. CHARME 2001 is the 11th in a series of working conferences devoted to the development and use of leading-edge formal techniques and tools for the design and veri?cation of hardware and hardware-like systems. Previous events in the ‘CHARME’ series were held in Bad Herrenalb (1999), Montreal (1997), Frankfurt (1995), Arles (1993), and Torino (1991). This series of meetings has been organized in cooperation with IFIP WG 10.5 and WG 10.2. Prior meetings, stretching backto the earliest days of formal hardware veri?cation, were held under various names in Miami (1990), Leuven (1989), Glasgow (1988), Grenoble (1986), Edinburgh (1985), and Darmstadt (1984). The convention is now well-established whereby the European CHARME conference alternates with its biennial counterpart, the International Conference on Formal Methods in Computer-Aided Design (FMCAD), which is held on even-numbered years in the USA. The conference tookplace during 4–7 September 2001 at the Institute for System Level Integration in Livingston, Scotland. It was co-hosted by the - stitute and the Department of Computing Science of Glasgow University and co-sponsored by the IFIP TC10/WG10.5 Working Group on Design and En- neering of Electronic Systems. CHARME 2001 also included a scienti?c session and social program held jointly with the 14th International Conference on Th- rem Proving in Higher Order Logics (TPHOLs), which was co-located in nearby Edinburgh.

This book has two main tasks: (1) to call attention to the special challenges presented by our experience of affect—all varieties of pleasure and pain—and (2) to show how these challenges can be overcome by an “enrichment approach” that understands affect as the enrichment or deterioration of conscious activity as a whole. This “enrichment approach” draws from Alfred North Whitehead as well as the pragmatists John Dewey and William James, all of whom thought of affect as a fundamental aspect of experience rather than a special class of feelings. It also draws from recent scientific research that suggests that the dynamic repertoire of consciousness can change, effectively expanding and contracting our capacity to feel. Weaving these perspectives together, the book develops a theory that accounts for the peculiar phenomenology of affect and sheds new light on a diverse range of experiences, from everyday pleasures and pains to the special satisfactions of the arts and religious festivity. At the same time, it presents a fresh and distinctively affect-centered perspective on the nature of consciousness.

Transactional memory (TM) is an appealing paradigm for concurrent programming on shared memory architectures. With a TM, threads of an application communicate, and synchronize their actions, via in-memory transactions. Each transaction can perform any number of operations on shared data, and then either commit or abort. When the transaction commits, the effects of all its operations become immediately visible to other transactions; when it aborts, however, those effects are entirely discarded. Transactions are atomic: programmers get the illusion that every transaction executes all its operations instantaneously, at some single and unique point in time. Yet, a TM runs transactions concurrently to leverage the parallelism offered by modern processors. The aim of this book is to provide theoretical foundations for transactional memory. This includes defining a model of a TM, as well as answering precisely when a TM implementation is correct, what kind of properties it can ensure, what are the power and limitations of a TM, and what inherent trade-offs are involved in designing a TM algorithm. While the focus of this book is on the fundamental principles, its goal is to capture the common intuition behind the semantics of TMs and the properties of existing TM implementations.
