The private single family house is still very much the preferred choice of home. Yet in recent years there have been many changes not only in the personal situations of the residents, their expectations and desires, but also in the rising costs of energy and raw materials. This has meant that issues such as multi-functionalism, the use of innovative building materials or energy-efficient building methods are increasing in significance. In this completely revised and expanded second edition these topical developments have been taken into consideration. The organisation and layout of the first volume, with its concise and detailed project documentation, has been retained. The authors introduce floor plan solutions using contemporary projects which bear in mind changing family structures. At the same time, the contributions provide an in-depth introduction to planning single family houses, from the design of the floor plan to useful tips for the realisation. In addition to this fundamental information, 22 projects are documented, providing ideas and inspiration for planners, students and clients. The international selection of projects highlights current trends in planning and designing single family housing and reveals the tried and tested basics.

An Italian Lady Goes To The Bronx written by Marianella Sclavi and has been published by Ipoc Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Fiction categories.

An extraordinary ethnographic study that sets its sights on the de-bronxification of daily life. After her children leave for college, an Italian woman who has lived for years in New York City, and who formerly taught "The Art of Listening" at a University in Milan, decides to explore the South Bronx. She wanted to see for herself how people live and think "on the other side of the barricade." And one fine morning, flaunting the advice and concerns of friends and colleagues, she donned her brightest clothes and embarked upon her mission. In the three months spent in one of the most notorious zones of America's urban disaster - where Fort Apache, the Bronx was filmed in the 1970s, starring Paul Newman - she collected a wealth of material on the positive, constructive forces at work in the Bronx: the new urban pioneers. The book, which sites itself at the crossroads of the new journalism and urban ethnography, recounts the encounters and clashes between the author, her culture, her expectations and the various personalities who guide her through the realities of daily life in the Bronx. Marianella Sclavi follows these persons throughout the course of their daily lives (she speaks of "shadowing" them), entering homes, school rooms, a courthouse, a union headquarters, and various churches and associations that host the meetings of committees doing battle for decent housing and the rebirth of urban community. And while doing so, she elaborates what she calls a "humor-based methodology for city planners, teachers, sociologists and administrators."

Minestrone is a chance to see Italy for the first time through the eyes of an Italian American who thought he knew what it meant to be 'Italian.' You will see the beauty of this wonderful country and feel the warmth of its people. But you also will be amazed and even shocked by the many surprises awaiting your first encounters with the food, the Italian bathroom, the bus ticket Gestapo, the housing, shopping, driving and parking, Italian laundry, the labor strikes and a 'fortress mentality' that manifests itself in a profusion of walls, gates, guard dogs and convoluted security devices. Do you know how hard it is to find minestrone soup in Italy? Or pepperoni pizza? Did you know that Italian American food is actually more authentic than Italian food? It's true! Where's the Minestrone is a fun and family narrative replete with sentimentality, cross-cultural comparisons and outrageous humor.

Dwelling In The World written by Elizabeth LaCouture and has been published by Columbia University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-08-10 with History categories.

By the early twentieth century, Chinese residents of the northern treaty-port city of Tianjin were dwelling in the world. Divided by nine foreign concessions, Tianjin was one of the world’s most colonized and cosmopolitan cities. Residents could circle the globe in an afternoon, strolling from a Chinese courtyard house through a Japanese garden past a French Beaux-Arts bank to dine at a German café and fall asleep in a British garden city-style semi-attached brick house. Dwelling in the World considers family, house, and home in Tianjin to explore how tempos and structures of everyday life changed with the fall of the Qing Empire and the rise of a colonized city. Elizabeth LaCouture argues that the intimate ideas and practices of the modern home were more important in shaping the gender and status identities of Tianjin’s urban elites than the new public ideology of the nation. Placing the Chinese home in a global context, she challenges Euro-American historical notions that the private sphere emerged from industrialization. She argues that concepts of individual property rights that emerged during the Republican era became foundational to state-society relations in early Communist housing reforms and in today’s middle-class real estate boom. Drawing on diverse sources from municipal archives, women’s magazines, and architectural field work to social surveys and colonial records, Dwelling in the World recasts Chinese social and cultural history, offering new perspectives on gender and class, colonialism and empire, visual and material culture, and technology and everyday life.

Smart And Sustainable Planning For Cities And Regions written by Adriano Bisello and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-04-25 with Business & Economics categories.

This book comprises a selection of the top contributions presented at the second international conference “Smart and Sustainable Planning for Cities and Regions 2017”, held in March 2017 in Bolzano, Italy. Featuring forty-six papers by policy-makers, academics and consultants, it discusses current groundbreaking research in smart and sustainable planning, including the progress made in overcoming cities’ challenges towards improving the quality of life. Climate change adaptation and mitigation of global warming, generally identified as drivers of global policies, are just the “tip of the iceberg” when it comes to smart energy transition. Indeed, equally relevant towards this current transformation – and key topics in this volume – are ICTs, public spaces and society; next economy for the city; strategies and actions for good governance; urban-rural innovation; rethinking mobility. The book’s depth in understanding and insightfulness in re-thinking demonstrate the breaking of new ground in smart and sustainable planning. A new ground that policy-makers, academics and consultants may build upon as a bedrock for smart and sustainable planning.
