Singularities are pervasive throughout nature and this book is one of the first to combine all aspects of singular optics and to give a detailed view of the subject. Singularities in Optical Physics and Engineering give a thorough introduction to singularities and their development and goes on to explain in detail important topics such as the types of singularities, their properties, detection and application and the emerging research trends that are still developing. The book concentrates mostly on phase singularities in a comprehensive development to allow a greater understanding of singularities throughout the chapters. It also discusses polarization singularities in its final chapter giving an in-depth description of this subject. With new advances being generated continuously, this book will cover a vibrant field of optics and will give an essential foundation to any students and researchers interested in singular optics. Part of IOP Series in Advances in Optics, Photonics and Optoelectronics

Numerical methods are playing an ever-increasing role in physics and engineering. This is especially true after the recent explosion of computing power on the desk-top. This book is aimed at helping the user to make intelligent use of this power tool. Each method is introduced through realistic examples and actual computer programs. The explanations provide the background for making a choice between similar approaches and the knowledge to explore the network for the appropriate existing codes. Tedious proofs and derivations, on the other hand, are delegated to references. Examples of uncoventional methods are also given to stimulate readers in exploring new ways of solving problems.

Principles And Applications Of Fourier Optics written by Robert K. Tyson and has been published by Inst of Physics Pub Incorporated this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-08-22 with Science categories.

Fourier optics, being a staple of optical design and analysis for over 50 years, has produced many new applications in recent years. In this text, Bob Tyson presents the fundamentals of Fourier optics with sufficient detail to educate the reader, typically an advanced student or working scientist or engineer, to the level of applying the knowledge to a specific set of design or analysis problems. Well aware that many of the mathematical techniques used in the field can now be solved digitally, the book will point to those methods or applicable computer software available to the reader.

The book aims at the identification of the organising concepts of some physical and biological phenomena, by means of an analysis of the foundations of mathematics and of physics. This is done in the perspective of unifying phenomena, of bringing different conceptual universes into dialog. The analysis of the role of “order” and of symmetries in the foundations of mathematics is linked to the main invariants and principles, among which the geodesic principle (a consequence of symmetries), which govern and confer unity to the various physical theories. Moreover, we attempt to understand causal structures, a central element of physical intelligibility, in terms of symmetries and their breakings. The importance of the mathematical tool is also highlighted, enabling us to grasp the differences in the models for physics and biology which are proposed by continuous and discrete mathematics, such as computational simulations. A distinction between principles of (conceptual) construction and principles of proofs, both in physics and in mathematics, guides this part of the work.As for biology, being particularly difficult and not as thoroughly examined at a theoretical level, we propose a “unification by concepts”, an attempt which should always precede mathematisation. This constitutes an outline for unification also basing itself upon the highlighting of conceptual differences, of complex points of passage, of technical irreducibilities of one field to another. Indeed, a monist point of view such as ours should not make us blind: we, the living objects, are surely just big bags of molecules or, at least, this is our main metaphysical assumption. The point though is: which theory can help us to better understand these bags of molecules, as they are, indeed, rather “singular”, from the physical point of view. Technically, this singularity is expressed by the notion of “extended criticality”, a notion that logically extends the pointwise critical transitions in physics.

Advanced Engineering Mathematics written by Alan Jeffrey and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-06-19 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Advanced Engineering Mathematics provides comprehensive and contemporary coverage of key mathematical ideas, techniques, and their widespread applications, for students majoring in engineering, computer science, mathematics and physics. Using a wide range of examples throughout the book, Jeffrey illustrates how to construct simple mathematical models, how to apply mathematical reasoning to select a particular solution from a range of possible alternatives, and how to determine which solution has physical significance. Jeffrey includes material that is not found in works of a similar nature, such as the use of the matrix exponential when solving systems of ordinary differential equations. The text provides many detailed, worked examples following the introduction of each new idea, and large problem sets provide both routine practice, and, in many cases, greater challenge and insight for students. Most chapters end with a set of computer projects that require the use of any CAS (such as Maple or Mathematica) that reinforce ideas and provide insight into more advanced problems. - Comprehensive coverage of frequently used integrals, functions and fundamental mathematical results - Contents selected and organized to suit the needs of students, scientists, and engineers - Contains tables of Laplace and Fourier transform pairs - New section on numerical approximation - New section on the z-transform - Easy reference system
