Of the four south Indian states, three states, – Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu – have ubiquitous and rampant child labour. Kerala is the only south Indian state to have been declared as a child labour-free state. Andhra Pradesh is second only to Uttar Pradesh in the extent of its child labour in the country. Karnataka and Tamil Nadu stand at seventh and tenth place in the list, respectively. This is somewhat surprising in the sense that the south Indian states are historically advanced in human development, women’s agency, demographic indicators and governance. Also, since the onset of economic reforms, they have been growing at an economically rapid rate. Why, then, are societies that have relatively high literacy and health indicators, well developed women’s agency and relatively better governance failing to protect their children from being forced into hard labour? This book examines some of these questions with regards to state policy towards the eradication of child labour in Karnataka.

The reduction of inequalities within and between countries stands as a policy goal, and deserves to take centre stage in the design of the Sustainable Development Goals agreed during the Rio+20 Summit in 2012.The 2013 edition of A Planet for Life represents a unique international initiative grounded on conceptual and strategic thinking, and – most importantly – empirical experiments, conducted on five continents and touching on multiple realities. This unprecedented collection of works proposes a solid empirical approach, rather than an ideological one, to inform future debate. The case studies collected in this volume demonstrate the complexity of the new systems required to accommodate each country's specific economic, political and cultural realities. These systems combine technical, financial, legal, fiscal and organizational elements with a great deal of applied expertise, and are articulated within a clear, well-understood, growth- and job-generating development strategy.Inequality reduction does not occur by decree; neither does it automatically arise through economic growth, nor through policies that equalize incomes downward via ill conceived fiscal policies. Inequality reduction involves a collaborative effort that must motivate all concerned parties, one that constitutes a genuine political and social innovation, and one that often runs counter to prevailing political and economic forces.

Women Writing Violence written by Shreerekha Subramanian and has been published by SAGE Publications Pvt. Limited this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-01-24 with Social Science categories.

Women Writing Violence engages with select contemporary novels in which women characters resist violence and redefine notions of community by imagining bonds with the exiled and the disempowered. The author interweaves the literary landscapes of African-American writer Toni Morrison with the oeuvre of South Asian writers Mridula Garg, Tahmina Durrani, Amrita Pritam, Bapsi Sidhwa, and Mahasweta Devi. This results in the opening of a new gateway into the thinking about violence and survival through a feminist, transnational lens. Subramanian places women's literary imaginary at the margins of both the nation-state and the patriarchal community. She creates a specifically female language and emphasizes the ingenious ways in which women characters in novels restore dignity and agency to their kin and beloved. The book focuses on voice and narrative techniques within the novel and transgresses the confines of the Enlightenment discourse to reckon with conceptual categories such as community and belonging.
