The purpose of this study was to investigate operator's situation awareness while controlling multiple unmanned aerial vehicles. A human operator may have to control more than one vehicle at a time because of an increase in demand of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in the civilian airspace. Although this might seem plausible, human operators tasked with operating more than one UAV face cognitive overloads resulting in failure to sustain the demanding situation awareness standards of the Federal Aviation Authority. In this study, participants were tasked with monitoring both one and two UAVs by one of three management styles representing three levels of automation. Results indicate that performance (as measured by number of errors committed by the participant) deteriorated while monitoring two UAVs. Four performance and preference ratings were analyzed from post-run and post-simulation questionnaires. The single UAV condition was significantly more efficient by workload and performance measures and led to higher situation awareness than the condition with two UAVs. There was no significant difference between the management styles used to monitor the UAVs.

Our goal is to improve the design of human-Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) interaction so operators can have better situation awareness (SA) of conditions pertaining to the UAVs. We developed a UAV interaction design approach that uses pre-loaded terrain data to augment real-time video data sensed by the UAVs. We hypothesized that augmentation of the video in this manner would provide better SA than a video stream alone. To test the hypothesis, we performed a counterbalanced within-subjects experiment in which the independent variable was video presentation approach. Our results show an increase in comprehension of 3D spatial relationships between the UAV and points on the earth when experiment participants were given an augmented video presentation, as evidenced by a statistically significant difference in participants mapping accuracy. We believe our results will generalize to situations beyond UAVs to those situations in which people must monitor and comprehend real-time, map-based information.

Analyzes the strategic implications of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) from a Singaporean point of view and concludes that UAV¿s lack of situational awareness and need for ever-larger amounts of communication bandwidth are major drawbacks that can be partially compensated for by various means. However, the author concludes that UAV¿s will complement, but not replace, manned aircraft.

This study analyzes the effective use of multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for the Navy's Surface Search and Control mission. In the future, the Navy hopes to leverage the capabilities of a family of UAVs to provide increased situational awareness in the maritime environment. This family of UAVs includes a Broad Area Maritime Surveillance (BAMS) UAV and Vertical Take-Off UAVs (VTUAVs). The concepts of operations for how these UAVs work together have yet to be determined. Questions exist about the best number of UAVs, types of UAVs, and tactics that will provide increased capabilities. Through modeling and agent-based simulation, this study explores the validity of future UAV requirements and provides insights into the effectiveness of different UAV combinations. For the scenarios modeled, the best UAV combination is BAMS plus two or three VTUAVs. However, analysis shows that small numbers of VTUAVs can perform as well without BAMS as they do with BAMS. For combinations with multiple UAVs, BAMS proves to be a valuable asset that not only reduces the number of missed classifications, but greatly improves the amount of coverage on all contacts in the maritime environment. BAMS tactics have less effect than the mere presence of BAMS itself.

Flight Control Of Unmanned Rotorcrafts For Enhanced Situational Awareness written by Igor Astrov and has been published by Nova Science Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014 with Drone aircraft categories.

The need for highly reliable and stable manoeuvres for unmanned rotorcrafts (URs) class of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAVs) has increased morbidly for critical situations in real-time search-and-rescue operations for fast situational awareness (SA). A rotorcraft is a heavier-than-air flying machine that obtains its lift from rotors. SA is simply being aware of what is going on around you. This book provides basic approaches for the modelling and simulation of control systems on the basis of equations of motion for various types of models of rotorcrafts (miniature helicopter, intermediate helicopter, coaxial rotor/ducted fan mini-UAV, trirotor mini-UAV, vectored thrust mini-UAV, quadrotor mini-UAV, X4-flyer mini-UAV, eight-rotor mini-UAV) with emphasis on the modeling and simulation of realistic dynamics for fast SA. The effectiveness of the proposed research technique has been verified in field of flight simulation tests for chosen control models of the URs using software package Simulink. From the simulation results it can be seen that the UR models demonstrated an advantage in achieving good maneuverability in controlled flight during missions and good performance for fast stabilisation of engines during manoeuvres, consequently, fast SA with economy in energy of batteries can be asserted during missions, and the duration of missions can be longer. The principal audiences for this book are faculty members, practitioners, researchers, and graduate and postgraduate students.

This book focuses on the fault-tolerant cooperative control (FTCC) of multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (multi-UAVs). It provides systematic and comprehensive descriptions of FTCC issues in multi-UAVs concerning faults, external disturbances, strongly unknown nonlinearities, and input saturation. Further, it addresses FTCC design from longitudinal motions to attitude motions, and outer-loop position motions of multi-UAVs. The book’s detailed control schemes can be used to enhance the flight safety of multi-UAVs. As such, the book offers readers an in-depth understanding of UAV safety in cooperative/formation flight and corresponding design methods. The FTCC methods presented here can also provide guidelines for engineers to improve the safety of aerospace engineering systems. The book offers a valuable asset for scientists and researchers, aerospace engineers, control engineers, lecturers and teachers, and graduates and undergraduates in the system and control community, especially those working in the field of UAV cooperation and multi-agent systems.

Future unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are expected to operate with higher level of autonomy to execute very complex military and civilian applications. New methods in planning and execution are required to coordinate these vehicles in real-time to ensure maximal efficiency of the team activities. These algorithms must be fast to enable rapid replanning in a dynamic environment. The planner must also be robust to uncertainty in the situational awareness. This thesis investigates the impact of information uncertainty and environmental changes to the task assignment and path planning algorithms. Several new techniques are presented that both speed up and embed robustness into previously published algorithms. The first is an incremental algorithm that significantly reduces the time required to update the cost map used in the task assignment when small changes occur in a complex environment. The second introduces a new robust shortest path algorithm that accounts for uncertainty in the arc costs. The algorithm is computational tractable and is shown to yield performance and robustness that are comparable to more sophisticated algorithms that are not suitable for real-time implementation. Experimental results are presented using this technique on a rover testbed. This thesis also extends a UAV search algorithm to include moving targets in the environment. This new algorithm coordinates a team of UAVs to search an unknown environment while balancing the need to track moving targets. These three improvements have had a big impact because they modify the Receding Horizon Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (RH-MILP) control hierarchy to handle uncertainty and properly react to rapid changes in the environment. Hence, these improvements enable the RH-MILP controller to be implemented in more realistic scenarios.

The commonly used terms, "unmanned" or "uninhabited," are misleading in the context of remotely operated vehicles. In the case of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), there are many people involved on the ground ranging from those operating the vehicle from a ground control station, to the people coordinating multiple UAVs in an air operations or air traffic control center. The complexity of remote vehicle operations is also often underestimated and seen as a simple navigation task, neglecting the more complex functions associated with remote camera operations, data gathering, and even weapons activity. In addition, trends in the military and civilian sectors involving reduced staffing, increased number of vehicles to control, and integration with other operations are associated with critical human factors issues. For example, the integration of UAVs with manned aircraft in the national airspace poses numerous human factors challenges. In summary, though these vehicles may be unmanned they are not unoperated, unsupervised, or uncontrolled. The role of the human in these systems is critical and raises a number of human factors research and design issues ranging from multiple vehicle control and adaptive automation to spatial disorientation and synthetic vision. The purpose of this book is to highlight the pressing human factors issues associated with remotely operated vehicles and to showcase some of the state of the art human-oriented research and design that speaks to these issues. In this book the human components of the "unmanned" system take center stage compared to the vehicle technology that often captures immediate attention.
