This is the story of six extraordinary men who each built something from nothing, redefined the automotive industry after World War II, and redirected its course for the future: Henry Ford II (visionary autocrat with an iron will), Shoichiro Honda (most successful automotive entrepreneur since Henry Ford I), Eberhard von Kuenheim (founder of the modern BMW), Lee Iacocca, Ferdinand Piech (builder of Volkswagen Group) and Robert Lutz (who left retirement at 70 and is still highly influential at General Motors). What made them special was the sheer volume of fundamental change they brought to the largest industry in the history of the world. They not only re-shaped the auto business, the six made a sizable dent in the societies they lived in. To a man they were great cognitive thinkers. Their minds worked with animal speed, even instinct speed. But more than anything these were brave and cantankerous souls who rode the waves of history. Each could see the future. They could just make it out-sometimes imperfectly, but could see it nonetheless. They took a business that had begun to mature and decline by the 1930s and found ways to make it fresh and whole again.- The compelling story of the global car business over the past half-century.- A lively and engaging narrative that recounts some times collaborative, sometimes archly antagonistic interactions among the men- Full of business revelations at the highest level, written by a journalist operating at the heart of the industry- Global appeal that shows how automotive groups in the USA, Europe and Asia have influenced each other- A business story interlaced with personal details that explains why the six were determined to be successfulAbout the AuthorFor two decades, Richard Johnson has worked for Crain Communications, publisher of the world's leading automotive business publications. Founding editor of Crain's Automotive News Europe, he has been a reporter and editor for the group in Detroit, Tokyo, Frankfurt and London. He is currently a senior editor with Automotive News in Detroit and regularly talks to the most senior executives in the leading car manufacturing groups.

In a hypnotizingly crazy daily routine, twenty-six men are locked in the production of kringles (a typical Scandinavian pastry) in a basement kitchen. Their only real connection with the life outside is Tanya, a sixteen-year-old girl who visits them for baked goods. One day, one of the bun bakers, who stand higher than the kringle bakers, tells them that he seduced Tanya, shattering their vision of the girl and the world. The idolization of innocence and beauty clashes with the harsh reality of life, reflecting the stillborn hopes and desires of the twenty-six men. A painful and terribly realistic story that deserves to be read by everyone. Maxim Gorky (1868-1936) has its place among the most talented and original Russian modern writers. A five-time Nobel Prize nominee, Gorky’s position in Russian literature is indisputable. He led a turbulent life of an exile, a dissenter, and a Bolshevik associate, which severely marked his literary endeavours. A strong supporter of Russia’s political, social, and cultural transformation, Gorky’s name still echoes in the annals of history. His best-known works include "The Lower Depths", "My Childhood,", "Mother", and "Children of the Sun".

Follow the adventures of the Gravesend Malt Whisky club as fired only by excess alcohol and enthusiasm they decide to embark on the Caledonian Challenge; a 54 mile walk across Scotland to be completed non-stop within 24 hours. Starting with training "walks" that seemingly involve more time in the pub than actually walking they eventually start some serious training and cover most of Kent in the process. Against all expectations they finally make it to Scotland and although embarking on a serious endeavour they still have time to muse on the landscape and history of the countryside they are walking through. Will they actually make it or simply retire to the pub half way round? Read on and find out... What they said about the book Funnily enough I started it last night and have got half way through it as (and this may surprise you) I found it to be a good read. A few things I would change and some great typos; my favourite being 'as bold as bras'. Just the kind of bras I like!! Look forward to the next submission. Andy Parr PR guru and alleged editor of Six Men on a Walk (although he never actually provided any edits) on receiving the first thirty pages for editing. At the end of the book I was left with a number of feelings; a very minor yearning for home, a regret that I had not seen more of Scotland, but mainly a desire to read more work by this new and exciting author, I Jackson esquire. Well done mate another achievement that I couldn't even imagine attempting. Darrell Read Retired (aged 42) city broker, best mate and part time sycophant. This is very, very good...I chuckled away...should really be dashing to Faversham...!!! James Pilcher Surveyor and illustrator of Six Men on a Walk

Alistair Cooke's Six Men is a highly personal account of six remarkable men who made a deep impression on twentieth century history. During his extraordinary broadcasting career of over sixty years Alistair Cooke encountered many legendary figures, in the varied worlds of journalism, politics, public life, sport and entertainment. Here are candid portraits of the lovable yet unreliable Charlie Chaplin, who, when asked to be Cooke's best man, mysteriously vanished on the wedding day; the charming yet childlike 'golden boy' Edward VIII; Cooke's mentor, the flawed contrarian and satirist H.L. Mencken; Humphrey Bogart, revealing the complex and private man behind the tough-guy image; the larger-than-life liberal politician Adlai Stevenson; and the heroic social reformer and philosopher Bertrand Russell. Each superbly realized description is a masterpiece of observation, warmth and humour, recalling a golden age of 'great men'. 'A rare delight ... he has that priceless gift of the gods, irresistible readability' Spectator 'There is never going to be anyone else like Cooke, a chronicler of amazing times' Daily Telegraph 'Six Men is the journalist's memoir par excellence' Newsweek 'The quintessential Alistair Cooke' Economist Alistair Cooke (1908-2004) enjoyed an extraordinary life in print, radio and television. The Guardian's Senior Correspondent in New York for twenty-five years and the host of groundbreaking cultural programmes on American television and of the BBC series America, Cooke was, however, best known both at home and abroad for his weekly BBC broadcast Letter from America, which reported on fifty-eight years of US life, was heard over five continents and totalled 2,869 broadcasts before his retirement in February 2004, far and away the longest-running radio series in broadcasting history.
