Excerpt from Sixth International Conference on Noise in Physical Systems: Proceedings of a Conference Held at the National Bureau of Standards, Gaithersburg, MD, April 6-10, 1981 Computers of the type described above consist of a series of one-to-one logical mappings. Thus the computation is a progression through a sequence of states, with only one antecedent state, and one consequent state, for each intermediate state of the computation. If the computation is driven forward, with a very small force, then fluctuations along that path, whether they are thermal equilibrium noise or some other form of noise, do not induce errors. In the presence of noise and a small driving force, a computation will proceed diffusively, going backwards almost as often as forwards. That, however, is irrelevant as long as it proceeds forward on the average. When the computation reaches its final state a modest one time energy loss is required to trap it there, and to prevent diffusion back toward earlier states. Dynamical Cognitive Science written by Lawrence M. Ward and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002 with Psychology categories.
An introduction to the application of dynamical systems science to the cognitive sciences. Dynamical Cognitive Science makes available to the cognitive science community the analytical tools and techniques of dynamical systems science, adding the variables of change and time to the study of human cognition. The unifying theme is that human behavior is an "unfolding in time" whose study should be augmented by the application of time-sensitive tools from disciplines such as physics, mathematics, and economics, where change over time is of central importance. The book provides a fast-paced, comprehensive introduction to the application of dynamical systems science to the cognitive sciences. Topics include linear and nonlinear time series analysis, chaos theory, complexity theory, relaxation oscillators, and metatheoretical issues of modeling and theory building. Tools and techniques are discussed in the context of their application to basic cognitive science problems, including perception, memory, psychophysics, judgment and decision making, and consciousness. The final chapter summarizes the contemporary study of consciousness and suggests how dynamical approaches to cognitive science can help to advance our understanding of this central concept.

Fractals Of Brain Fractals Of Mind written by Earl R. Mac Cormac and has been published by John Benjamins Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996 with Medical categories.
This collective volume is the first to discuss systematically what are the possibilities to model different aspects of brain and mind functioning with the formal means of fractal geometry and deterministic chaos. At stake here is not an approximation to the way of actual performance, but the possibility of brain and mind to implement nonlinear dynamic patterns in their functioning. The contributions discuss the following topics (among others): the edge-of-chaos dynamics in recursively organized neural systems and in intersensory interaction, the fractal timing of the neural functioning on different scales of brain networking, aspects of fractal neurodynamics and quantum chaos in novel biophysics, the fractal maximum-power evolution of brain and mind, the chaotic dynamics in the development of consciousness, etc. It is suggested that the margins of our capacity for phenomenal experience, are fractal-limit phenomena . Here the possibilities to prove the plausibility of fractal modeling with appropriate experimentation and rational reconstruction are also discussed. A conjecture is made that the brain vs. mind differentiation becomes possible, most probably, only with the imposition of appropriate symmetry groups implementing a flowing interface of features of local vs. global brain dynamics.
