His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish. riiHERE are four Sundays in Advent; four -'- solemn steps to lead us to the blessed festival of our Lord's Nativity. And you will observe, that the services of the Church during these have been so framed as to fix our minds on the last great Coming of our God and Saviour, and the end of all things here below. Thus, the appointed lesson for this evening has spoken to us of the Day of the Lord of Hosts, when He alone shall be exalted, and all that is high and lifted up shall be humbled into the dust. Following out this intention of the Church, it has been a frequent custom for the pastors of Christ's flock, during Advent, to speak of those great subjects, which are called the Four Last Things: ?Death, Judgment, Heaven, and Hell. The stedfast consideration of these has been in all times one of the great standing safeguardsagainst sin; a bulwark against the enemy who assaults our souls by the things that are seen, and temporal. Therefore alsojjsaid the wisdom of God, Whatsoever thou takest in hand, remember the end, and thou shalt never do amiss: ?and the Divine compassion laments over sinners who live unconscious of these great realities; O that they were wise, that they understood this, that they would consider their latter end! On the four Sunday evenings which lie between us and Christmas, let us meditate upon these in order. And may He, the Fountain of all Truth, and the Preacher to every conscience, convincing and swaying us by His Holy Spirit, so touch the lips that speak, and the ears and hearts that listen, as to turn these Great Things into abiding motives, and penetrate our inmost convictions with their reality, and make the considerati..

Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the Gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the Gospel. It is a truth so familiar to us, as, from its very familiarity, to appear a truism, that God, in all things, works by means: that, throughout the whole circle of the Divine economy, both physical and moral, in his kingdoms of nature and of grace, Instrumentality is the self-directing law of Him, who giveth life, and breath, and all things; and from whom alone, as their ever-flowing source and fountain, cometh down every good, and every perfect gift. But while the recognition and application of this fundamental law of the Divine government, is the first principle of all discoveries in nature, and of all proficiency in science and in arts, ?it may be more than questioned whether the law itself ispractically acknowledged and acted on at all in the same measure, or to the same effect, in things spiritual, as in things natural: in other words, whether, not in profession only, but in practice, we deal with the spiritual, as we do with the natural world; regarding instrumentality to be alike the rule of the Divine government in both; and the means of grace, consequently, to be as essential to our progress in Divine knowledge, as the laws of nature to our proficiency in human science.
