Sixty Years of Poems by Joe presents a group of poems that reflect the poet's work over the last six decades, ranging from classically structured poems to prose verse, and variations of these. This selection presents the work of a poet who is a lawyer, a novelist (Sanctified, 2013), a farmer, and a great grandfather, but always a poet. The book contains 41 poems, of which 15 are Haiku. "Haiku is special. It has tight parameters that force the poet to think and explore. This usually results in a satisfying poem, but occasionally it produces a profound thought bomb that takes poet and reader to another place," Joe says in the introduction to the Haiku section. Now in his late 70's, he only in the last few years began writing in the Haiku form. "It's amazing how expansive a poem of three lines with a total of seventeen syllables can be. For example consider these two poems: She planted an elm. It grew and shaded my yard. Then she chopped it down. and Bright white clouds roll in, against a vast azure sky. Then the dark clouds come. "The three short lines in the first poem cover human experience of many years, and the human condition in general, and precisely the same can be said of the second poem. And yet what is invoked is not spoken about directly. But we feel it and we know it. For me that is the wonder of Haiku."

Joseph Papp (1921-1991), theater producer, champion of human rights and of the First Amendment, founder of the New York Shakespeare Festival and Public Theater, changed the American cultural landscape. Born Yussel Papirofsky in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, he discovered Shakespeare in public school and first produced a show on an aircraft carrier during World War II. After a stint at the Actors’ Lab in Hollywood, he moved to New York, where he worked as a CBS stage manager during the golden age of television. He fought Parks Commissioner Robert Moses (as well as Mayors Wagner, Lindsay, Beame and Koch) winning first the right to stage free Shakespeare in New York’s Central Park, then municipal funding to keep it going. He built the Delacorte Theater and later rebuilt the former Astor Library on Lafayette Street, transforming it into the Public Theater. In addition to helping create an "American" style of Shakespeare, Papp pioneered colorblind casting and theater as a not-for-profit institution. He showcased playwrights David Rabe, Elizabeth Swados, Ntozake Shange, David Hare, Wallace Shawn, John Guare, and Vaclav Havel; directors Michael Bennett, Wilford Leach and James Lapine; actors Al Pacino, Colleen Dewhurst, George C. Scott, James Earl Jones, Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline, Sam Waterston, and Denzel Washington; and produced Hair, Sticks and Bones, for colored girls, The Normal Heart, and A Chorus Line, the longest running musical in Broadway history. "This first biography of the late Joseph Papp will be a hard act to follow." — Booklist "The final portrait that emerges might have been jointly painted by Goya, Whistler and Francis Bacon." — Benedict Nightingale, front-page New York Times Sunday Book Review Playwright Tony Kushner called Papp "one of the very few heroes this tawdry, timid business has produced" and the book, a "nourishing and juicy biography." "Helen Epstein recounts [Papp's] career in [this] definitive, meticulously researched and highly readable biography. [...] It is a tribute to Epstein’s narrative skill that the detailed account of Papp’s decline and eventual defeat by cancer [...] reads as both riveting and horrifying." — Ellen Schiff, All About Jewish Theatre Oklahoma-born Paul Davis created 51 iconic posters for Joseph Papp, starting in 1975 with the New York Shakespeare Festival production of "Hamlet" starring Sam Waterston. "It was inspiring to work with Joe," says Davis. "We would discuss what he wanted to achieve in a production, and he trusted me to find a way to express it. And he respected the poster as its own dramatic form." The artist’s work has been exhibited in the U.S., Europe and Japan. He is a recipient of a special Drama Desk award created for his theater art. Davis was elected to the Art Directors Club Hall of Fame and the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame, and is a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome.

I began writing song lyrics, short stories, and poetry some 48-years-ago. While I was in high school, during the 60s, I had the privilege of meeting Poet Laureate of the United States of America, Mr. Robert Frost. He spoke with me discussing my writings, my poetry. He told me to keep writing and reading, and as I continued I would learn so much more, and eventually become a published poet. I have continued writing lyrics, short stories, and poetry. I am now 63-years-old, and I have been published. I have always told other poets and writers to keep on writing, and learning about the many different styles of the written arts. I have also spent 35-years as an entertainer, singer, song writer, and also a musician. I have worked with Tom T. Hall, Billy Jo Spears, Red Sovine, Bobby Bare, and Kitty Wells. I have also played with Rhythm Blues Entertainers too, The Four Tops, The Platters, The Shrills, and Visions ( Mark Farner, of Grand Funk Railroad, and the survivors of the Lynard Skynard Band). We were an International Country Rhythm Blues Band, and played together for several years. The way I see writing poetry is a likeness to a photograph of a moment, a dream, a place, a thing, a memory. Life comes at us in many ways, sometimes in many different ways at once. It's the situations that arise, the masks some people wear, the way they talk and rub shoulders with everybody. These things make up the poetry I write. When you sit down and look at life you'll find it's much bigger than just us. This is poetry, lyric writing, short stories, journalism, actually all the arts. I have found all things good in writing, even when I'm turned down by an editor. It's all learning, and enjoying what I do. I choose a photograph, a moment, a dream, or a situation and I write about it. I create a picture with words. I live a simple life as a disabled veteran of the U.S.M.C., and of the Vietnam War. However, I am simply me, and I don't try and say I'm someone else. Who am I? Well I'm a human being who loves the arts. My message to you all who reads this is KEEP ON WRITING, KEEP ON KEEPING ON.

LIFE WITHOUT MY LOVE. For late in the fall the love of my life, Met with God to discuss her short life. She was a young thing, gone before her time, As people were saying, gone before her prime. The day she left was very sad to her friends, She will be missed by family until the end. Her long flowing hair, light brown with highlights, That glimmered in the magical moonlight. Her eyes of blue have been closed to all, Lying peacefully is what she will do for all. Her hands placed like she is praying to God, With a small smile on her face, to please God. We know that she has made it to heaven, While on earth, she made it seem like heaven. She treated everyone with respect and admiration, The love in her heart was greater than any affirmation. We shall carry her picture in our mind, And love her until the end of our time. We will know she can now watch over us, For we hope she will help to guide us. I will say a prayer every day from now on, So she will know, I will not forget her from now on. She will be in my heart, because she was my love, I will enjoy when we meet again and fall in love.

"Indigo Bunting" is a collection of sixty poems, each describing a different species of birds and each rich in metaphorical meanings. No doubt both bird-watchers and lovers of poetry will find it delightful. The poems are accurate in terms of ornithology and traditional in poetic form, i.e. they please the ear with rhyme, and they throb with rhythm.

One Heartbeat Away written by Joe Poet and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-02-12 with categories.

"One Heartbeat Away" is a compilation of thoughts and emotions transformed into words. It is a mixture of different styles of poetry from free verse to prose. Some poems are simply for humor like: "Once Upon A Time," which was written in an inspired five minute time period. Some are more serious like: "The Storm," which was written during an emotional period at the beginning the author's incarceration. It is a product of Joe the Poet's true feelings as if the the walls were truly closing in on him. There are poems for friends and family like: "A Birthday Star" dedicated to Joe's daughter, and "A Friend Indeed." Love is indeed Joe the Poet's favorite subject, and it shows with the many love poems offered in this book. It is surprising that the title poem "One Heartbeat Away" is one of the shortest, yet what we believe to be one of the most profound. The title is universal and can express many of life's scenarios: one heartbeat away from love; one heartbeat away from freedom; or one heartbeat away from family. "One Heartbeat Away" sums up feelings for most of everyone's life experiences and has helped the author express himself in a productive way. Anyone with a love for poetry and free expression is going to love this book
