Excerpt from Sixty Years of Saint Lawrence The formulation of the general plan of the book, the gathering of a large part of the material and the group ing of it in chapters according to the original design, was mainly the work of Professor Hardie. When this stage had been reached a long halt followed. The subscriptions were not yet adequate, no definite arrangements had been made for publication, there was still much labor to be performed in preparing the copy; no one had courage to proceed. Finally, in the fall of 1914, at the joint sug gestion of Professors Gaines and Hardie, the class of 1916, which was then planning to issue an annual of the usual ephemeral type, decided in lieu of that to complete and publish this far more valuable and lasting memorial; and in commemoration of their graduation date in the sixtieth year since the founding of the University, they chose as the title Sixty 1 ears of St. Lawrence. Great credit is due to the business manager, Mr. G. A. Manley, who secured the necessary number of subscriptions and made admi rable arrangements for publication by one of the best book-publishing firms in the country, and to Mr. Malcolm Black, chief Of the editorial staff, who zealously collabo rated with Professor Gaines in the heavy task of complet ing the copy and following it through the press-work. Of Time And An Island written by John Keats and has been published by Syracuse University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1987-04-01 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Thirty years ago, John Keats and his family purchased a two-acre island in the St. Lawrence River, at a time when boats were still lovingly crafted of wood and an island could be had for $4,000. Depending on the elements and on their own resourcefulness, the Keats family thrives in the rhythms of island life-fishing, learning to navigate the river and read the clouds for weather, acquiring an "Indian" view of time, maintaining a house, several boats, and three children on a windswept rock. But more than a book about a single family's adventures, this one is strong witness that we all need islands of our own in the midst of life. Originally published in 1974, Of Time and an Island was chosen as a Book-of-the-Month Club alternate selection.

Monsieur written by Lawrence Durrell and has been published by Open Road Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-06-12 with Fiction categories.

From the olive trees of southern France to Gnostic cults in Egypt, a man and his lovers are invented and reinvented in this first volume of a great literary adventure. For British doctor Bruce Drexel, a return to Provence is bittersweet. Here, at a rustic chateau, he once fell in love with Sylvie, the Frenchwoman who would become his wife, and befriended her brother, Piers. The three made up a peculiar, potent ménage for years until Sylvie’s descent into madness and Piers’s suicide. As Drexel attends to Piers’s affairs, he becomes steeped in the memories of a spiritually transformational trip to Egypt; the band of intellectual confederates who used to be his intimate friends; and a three-sided love that became his reason for being. So begins Monsieur, the masterful first entry of Durrell’s Avignon Quintet, an infinite regress of memory and imagination that challenges the formal conventions of fiction.
