Excerpt from Sketches and Tales of the Shetland Islands The general aspect, scenery, and customs of these islands, are so different, from aught that British travellers are accustomed to meet with, we trust some brief sketches tending to delineate and illus trate them, will not be unwelcome in these palmy days for tourists; the more especially, as a com plete modern account of Shetland is still a deside ratum. All that is aimed at in the following pages, is to present a few truthful pictures of a wild and primitive district, and of a state of society rapidly disappearing under the influence of modern ad vancement. Shetland, as it still is, is not very dif ferent, in many important particulars, from what it was in the days of Magnus Troil of hospitable memory. But steam navigation, enterprize, and capital, are producing rapid changes here as else where, so that passing away is written legibly on the dwellings - the fields and gardens - all, in deed, but the old rocks themselves. We hail improvements - but we cling notwith standing to early memories and ancient usages; and would gladly see them delineated on something less perishable than oral tradition, and especially in an abler style than we may hope to attain in the attempt. The two island groups of Orkney and Shetland have much in common. In each the grey stone houses and treeless landscapes are scoured in winter by stinging gales, and in summer lie under the endless days of the 'simmer din'. Originally Norwegian, they have been part of Scotland for five hundred years, but their many and varied legends, folk tales and customs are still saturated with Norse influences. While this book tells tales and discusses beliefs that are known throughout the northern isles, it also outlines those elements which are unique to each island group. The Folklore of Orkney and Shetland is the standard account of what to this day is one of the richest repositories of lore and custom in Britain. Ernest Marwick not only recounts countless tales which have been transmitted aurally and by writing, but also places these tales within geographical and historical contexts, thus enabling a deeper appreciation of this wonderful material. A bibliography is also included, together with an index of tale types and motifs.

Choreomania written by Kélina Gotman and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018 with Music categories.

When political protest is read as epidemic madness, religious ecstasy as nervous disease, and angular dance moves as dark and uncouth, the 'disorder' being described is choreomania. At once a catchall term to denote spontaneous gestures and the unruly movements of crowds, 'choreomania' emerged in the nineteenth century at a time of heightened class conflict, nationalist policy, and colonial rule. In this book, author K lina Gotman examines these choreographies of unrest, rethinking the modern formation of the choreomania concept as it moved across scientific and social scientific disciplines. Reading archives describing dramatic misformations-of bodies and body politics-she shows how prejudices against expressivity unravel, in turn revealing widespread anxieties about demonstrative agitation. This history of the fitful body complements stories of nineteenth-century discipline and regimentation. As she notes, constraints on movement imply constraints on political power and agency. In each chapter, Gotman confronts the many ways choreomania works as an extension of discourses shaping colonialist orientalism, which alternately depict riotous bodies as dangerously infected others, and as curious bacchanalian remains. Through her research, Gotman also shows how beneath the radar of this colonial discourse, men and women gathered together to repossess on their terms the gestures of social revolt.
