One of the most influential German-language writers of the late twentieth century, Max Frisch (1911-1991) not only has canonical status in Europe, but has also been well received in the English-speaking world. This book tells the story of German-language literature on film, beginning with pioneering motion picture adaptations of Faust in 1897 and early debates focused on high art as mass culture. It explores, analyzes and contextualizes the so-called 'golden age' of silent cinema in the 1920s, the impact of sound on adaptation practices, the abuse of literary heritage by Nazi filmmakers, and traces the role of German-language literature in exile and postwar films, across ideological boundaries in divided Germany, in New German Cinema, and in remakes and movies for cinema as well as television and streaming services in the 21st century. Having provided the narrative core to thousands of films since the late 19th century, many of German cinema's most influential masterpieces were inspired by canonical texts, popular plays, and even children's literature. Not being restricted to German adaptations, however, this book also traces the role of literature originally written in German in international film productions, which sheds light on the interrelation between cinema and key historical events. It outlines how processes of adaptation are shaped by global catastrophes and the emergence of nations, by materialist conditions, liberal economies and capitalist imperatives, political agendas, the mobility of individuals, and sometimes by the desire to create reflective surfaces and, perhaps, even art. Commercial cinema's adaptation practices have foregrounded economic interest, but numerous filmmakers throughout cinema history have turned to German-language literature not simply to entertain, but as a creative contribution to the public sphere, marking adaptation practice, at least potentially, as a form of active citizenship.

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2004 im Fachbereich Germanistik - Neuere Deutsche Literatur, Note: 2,0, Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster (Germanistisches Seminar), Veranstaltung: Proseminar: Literatur und Unfall, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Diese Arbeit steh unter der Prämisse, die thematischen und strukturellen Ähnlichkeiten der Erzählung Skizze eines Unglücks aus Max Frischs Tagebuch 1966-71 und Otto Julius Bierbaums 1906/07 erschienenen Roman Prinz Kuckuck. Leben Taten Meinungen und Höllenfahrt eines Wollüstlings darzustellen. Abgegrenzt vom Gesamtroman Prinz Kuckuck werden hier besonders die Seiten 409 bis 444 betrachtet, da sonst der maximale Umfang dieser Arbeit nicht gewährleistet werden kann. Als Ausgangsthese gilt, dass in beiden Texten drei miteinander verschränkte Pole zu finden sind: Die Identitätsprobleme der beiden Figuren Viktor und Henry Felix ́, die Fixierung auf und der Verlust der gesellschaftlichen Rolle, eine damit einhergehende Unsicherheit nebst kommunikativem Versagen, und letztendlich das Auto als Statussymbol und (vermeintliches) Mittel zur Rehabilitation. Für beide Texte kennzeichnend ist die Auseinandersetzung mit der Diskrepanz zwischen eigener Identität und Rolle – inwiefern diese Rollen nun von außen auferlegt und zur Sicherung des Selbstverständnisses von den Protagonisten verinnerlicht, angenommen werden, und ob diese durch ihre Rollenannahme weitgehend identitätslos bleiben, soll geklärt werden. Des weiteren ergeben sich Motivähnlichkeiten, die aufgeführt werden sollen. Die beiden Texte werden separat auf diese These geprüft werden, sowohl inhaltlich als auch formal. Die Analyse der Skizze eines Unglücks wird dabei ausführlicher behandelt werden, da dieser Text einerseits in der Forschung weit mehr beachtet wurde, andererseits durch seine Kompaktheit eine tiefergehende Analyse auf wenig Raum zulä sst. Im Vergleich dazu werden die Ähnlichkeiten und Differenzen zu Prinz Kuckuck aufgezeigt werden, um im Anschluss vorzustellen, welche Aussagen sich über das Verständnis der Identitätsfindung und die Relation zwischen Mensch und Maschine trotz des zeitlichen Abstands von sechzig Jahren machen lassen.
