In der vorliegenden Untersuchung entwickelt der Autor aus dem platonischen Werk eine Theorie der Sklaverei, welche ausgehend von Platons Psychologie eine kosmologisch fundierte politische Anthropologie der Differenz von freiem Bürger und Sklaven zutage fördert. Das Verhältnis von Herrschenden und Beherrschten ist prototypisch sowohl in der Konstellation von Herr und Sklave als auch im Verhältnis des Menschen zu sich selbst vorgegeben. Es zeigt sich, dass nicht nur ökonomisch, sondern insbesondere als Kontrast der Sklave prinzipiell die Bedingung des Bürgers und der demokratischen Polis abgibt. Gleichwohl muss die Sklaverei nicht in jeder denkbaren Gesellschaftsform eine zwangsläufige Institution sein, vielmehr zielt Platons Denken wesentlich darauf hin, offensichtliche und verschleierte Formen der Ausbeutung von notwendigen Unterordnungsverhältnissen zu unterscheiden.

This is the first large scale study on the link between the concepts of intellect and grace in the writings of St. Augustine of Hippo. Its five chapters deal with Augustine's writings on grace as they focus on questions concerning epistemology and hermeneutics. Already non-Christian ancient philosophers identified intellectual perfection with salvation as caused by divine grace. Under their influence (I) Augustine developed also his biblical thought (II). The culmination of his concept of intellectus gratiae, however, came in the later works on sacraments (III), hermeneutics (IV) and against Pelagius and Julian of Eclanum (V). This study highlights that development and recommends the concept of intellectus gratiae as a possible key to Augustine's theological thought as a whole.

This study examines the complex history of slavery in East Africa, focusing on the area that came under German colonial rule. In contrast to the policy pursued at the time by other colonial powers in Africa, the German authorities did not legally abolish slavery in their colonial territories. However, despite government efforts to keep the institution of slavery alive, it significantly declined in Tanganyika in the period concerned. This book highlights the crucial role played by the slaves in the process of emancipation. The book is divided into three parts. The first explores the rise of slavery in Tanganyika in the second half of the nineteenth century when the region became more fully integrated into the world economy. This is followed by an analysis of German colonial policy. The authorities believed that abolition should be avoided at all costs since it would undermine the power and prosperity of the local slave owning elites whose effective collaboration was thought to be indispensable to the functioning of colonial rule. The final part recounts how slaves by their own initiative brought the 'evil institution' to an end. This comprised both highly disruptive moments of wholesale flight and, depending on the possibility of escape and individual circumstances, more subtle changes in servile relationships.
