The theme of community has perhaps never been of a more vital significance than in our present day and age. The process we refer to as modernity has been synonymous with the gradual fragmentation and disintegration of traditional communities on various levels of our societies. Today, we might be facing the culmination of this process. The spectres of nationalism are undermining various national and international communities. Inequality is on the rise. If people unite it is too often in the mistrust and sometimes hatred of other people. Hans Christian Andersen lived at a time when this process was at its early stages, and he was acutely aware of its potential perils. Alongside the transformations of traditional communities, other communities seem to appear. A recurring element in these culturally specific communities is literature, and Hans Christian Andersen is a key figure here, as his literary and cultural legacy has a magnetic effect on people around the globe. A vivid example of this effect was the conference Hans Christian Andersen and Community. The conference was held at the University of Southern Denmark in 2017 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Hans Christian Andersen's status as honourary citizen in Odense. This book presents a selection of 19 contributions to the conference. In various ways, each chapter activates the concept of community in relation to Andersen as an author and as a citizen of the world he lived in--as well as the cultural icon which he has become.

At the Hans Christian Andersen Museum in Odense the writer's trunk is on display. It is worn and dusty, for Andersen loved to travel and was often off on some journey. Everywhere he came, he studied people and collected impressions that he later transformed into characters and places in his immortal fairytales. And, unlike the trunk, his fairytales never wear out, but remain as relevant and gripping today as they were 150 years ago. In this book we have collected 15 of Andersen's short tales, some of which are extremely well-known, others less so. What the tales all share is that apart from telling a particular story they also describe people's thoughts, actions and dreams. Each of the fairytales is provided with a commentary from a researcher at the Hans Christian Andersen Centre, University of Southern Denmark, as well as a brand-new illustration. Hans Christian Andersen is known and loved throughout modern China. With his fairy tales and other stories, the Danish author builds a bridge of imagination, sympathy, and human warmth between people and readers, between Chinese and Danes. This collection of studies is the result of an exceptional working relationship between researchers from Fudan University in Shanghai and the University of Southern Denmark in Odense, initiated during a gathering in Shanghai in 2011 to launch a research project on "The Global Significance of Hans Christian Andersen." The book deals with Andersen's significance, unmatched for a transnational author, in China, and with the first translations of his tales by which, a century ago, he was introduced to Chinese readers. It provides insights from a variety of literary, cultural, and political perspectives. Above all, the book bears witness to a common engagement with the task of achieving insight and understanding. A History Of Translation And Interpretation written by Wenjie Li and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017 with categories.

H.C. Andersen's tales are considered classical fairy tales in China. How they have achieved this canonical status is one of the concerns of this book. Taking a historical point of view, the author explains how the Chinese translations and interpretations of his tales, since they were first introduced and translated, have contributed to their canonization, and how they have shaped the various images of Andersen in different temporal periods. Moreover, considering translation as a social practice taking place in a polysystem, this book further explores how socio-political factors-like economics and ideology-as well as human factors-such as patrons, translators, and readers-influenced the Chinese translations and interpretations of Andersen's tales. By referring to the Chinese target texts, English mediating texts, and Danish original texts, this book clarifies the intertextual relations and influences operating among different versions of Andersen's tales. Hans Christian Andersen's longstanding canonical status among his Russian readers is owed specifically to his fairy tales. For the nearly two centuries of their presence in Russian culture, these stories have become an organic part of the cultural memory of generations of readers, his texts constituting a particular cultural code that is employed in various artistic fields. The scholars involved in the "Andersen in Russia" project, whose works are published here, aimed to analyze the cultural code of Russian Anderseniana. They have explored specifically the legacy of Andersen's fairy tales, which has influenced the most diverse spheres of Russian culture: literature, literary criticism, music, film, theater, various media forms, and the art of illustration.

Hans Christian Andersen was the most prominent Danish author of the nineteenth century. Now known primarily for his fairy tales, during his lifetime he was equally famous for his novels, travelogues, poetry, and stage works, and it was through these genres that he most often reflected on the world around him. With the bicentennial of Andersen's birth in 2005, there is still much about the writer that is not yet common knowledge. This book explores a single aspect of that void - his interest in and relationship to the musical culture of nineteenth-century Europe. Why look to Andersen for information about music? To begin, Andersen had a musical background. He enjoyed a brief career as an opera singer and dancer at the Royal Theater in Copenhagen, and in later years he went on to produce opera libretti for the Danish and German stage. Andersen was also an avid music devotee. He made thirty major European tours during his seventy years, and on each of these trips he regularly attended opera and concert performances, recording his impressions in a series of travel diaries. In short, Andersen was a well-informed listener, and as this book reveals, his reflections on the music of his age serve as valuable sources for the study of music reception in the nineteenth century. Over the course of his life, Andersen embraced and then later rejected performers such as Maria Malibran, Franz Liszt, and Ole Bull, and his interest in opera and instrumental music underwent a series of dramatic transformations. In his final years, Andersen promoted figures as disparate as Wagner and Mendelssohn, while strongly objecting to Brahms. Although such changes in taste might be interpreted as indiscriminate by modern-day readers, this study shows that such shifts in opinion were not contradictory, but rather quite logical given the social and cultural climate of the age.
