Following the suggestion of the historian Peter Parish, these essays probe "the edges" of slavery and the sectional conflict. The authors seek to recover forgotten stories, exceptional cases and contested identities to reveal the forces that shaped America, in the era of "the Long Civil War," c.1830-1877. Offering an unparalleled scope, from the internal politics of southern households to trans-Atlantic propaganda battles, these essays address the fluidity and negotiability of racial and gendered identities, of criminal and transgressive behaviors, of contingent, shifting loyalties and of the hopes of freedom that found expression in refugee camps, court rooms and literary works.

History is dramatic—and the renowned, award-winning authors Christopher Collier and James Lincoln Collier demonstrate this in a compelling series aimed at young readers. Covering American history from the founding of Jamestown through present day, these volumes explore far beyond the dates and events of a historical chronicle to present a moving illumination of the ideas, opinions, attitudes, and tribulations that led to the birth of this great nation. In Slavery and the Coming of the Civil War, the authors explain the occurrences in America during the thirty years between 1831 and 1861. This book discusses the attitudes and events that led up to and caused the Civil War in America, particularly the institution of slavery, the abolitionist movement, and the rise of Abraham Lincoln.

Conflict And Compromise written by Roger L. Ransom and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1989-09-29 with Business & Economics categories.

In this book Professor Roger Ransom examines the economic and political factors that led to the attempt by Southerners to dissolve the Union in 1860, and the equally determined effort of Northerners to preserve it. Ransom argues that the system of capitalist slavery in the South not only "caused" the Civil War by producing tensions that could not be resolved by compromise; it also played a crucial role in the outcome of that war by crippling the southern war effort at the same time that emancipation became a unifying issue for the North. Ransom also carefully examines the impact that four years of war and the emancipation of slaves had both on the defeated South and the victorious North. -- From publisher's description.

Emancipating Slaves Enslaving Free Men written by Jeffrey Hummel and has been published by Open Court this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-11-18 with History categories.

This book combines a sweeping narrative of the Civil War with a bold new look at the war’s significance for American society. Professor Hummel sees the Civil War as America’s turning point: simultaneously the culmination and repudiation of the American revolution. While the chapters tell the story of the Civil War and discuss the issues raised in readable prose, each chapter is followed by a detailed bibliographical essay, looking at all the different major works on the subject, with their varying ideological viewpoints and conclusions. In his economic analysis of slavery, Professor Hummel takes a different view than the two major poles which have determined past discussions of the topic. While some writers claim that slavery was unprofitable and harmful to the Southern economy, and others maintain it was profitable and efficient for the South, Hummel uses the economic concept of Deadweight Loss to show that slavery was both highly profitable for slave owners and harmful to Southern economic development. While highly critical of Confederate policy, Hummel argues that the war was fought to prevent secession, not to end slavery, and that preservation of the Union was not necessary to end slavery: the North could have let the South secede peacefully, and slavery would still have been quickly terminated. Part of Hummel’s argument is that the South crucially relied on the Northern states to return runaway slaves to their owners. This new edition has a substantial new introduction by the author, correcting and supplementing the account given in the first edition (the major revision is an increase in the estimate of total casualties) and a foreword by John Majewski, a rising star of Civil War studies.

From 1861 to 1865, the Civil War was fought in ten thousand places across this nation. More than three million Americans fought in it, and more than six hundred thousand men died in it. The Civil War has been given many names: the War Between the States, the Second American Revolution, and the War of the Rebellion. By whatever name, it was unquestionably the most important event in the life of our nation. It saw the end of slavery and the downfall of a southern planter aristocracy. It was the watershed of a new political and economic order and the beginning of big industry, big business, and big government. It was the first modern war and, for Americans, the costliest. --jacket.
